So here is the low down.... before i truly begin this post let me introduce myself. My name is Erika i am a trained automotive technician however i am not currently not actively wrenching so with that said i am mechanically incline and am ready to jump into this project. Yes its a project!! YAYAYAYAYA? Today i bought my first scooter a 2009 260cc linhai vog? (thats what it says on the sides ) with roughly 3k miles. i cant spell the other name not even gonna try. So i buy it knowing very well that there is work to be done... i just hope this isnt a foreshadowing of what is to come. i believe the clutch is out, two reasons there is smoke coming from the housing and a terrible noise. squealing noise kind of like the noise a squealing tire makes and it stinks like clutch. That being said i have done the research and am just going to do a full cvt maintenance while i am in there. The big question i have right now is this. The rear wheel on it has just now locked up could this be directly related to the transmission? I will be doing a complete cleaning and inspection of the entire scooter. as it is used and yea well i dont trust the person who owned it before me for starters here is a list of things i will replace regardless of the shape they are in and for my own sanity. Oil change / fluid change hoses vacuum and fuel all the filters fuel, air, oil spark plug clutch as listed above going to also change the weights and the belt inside i will more than likely be buying a clutch assembly thats fully assembled and ready to install with a new bell housing as im sure mine is either warped or burned. i am going to reseat all the panel i may even break down and paint them.... im more than likely going to need a new battery. I am also going to do a valve adjustment while i am in there if its needed i will check them and adjust them as necessary i am aware of the specifications on that as well. So if there is anything else i should really do at this mileage i would love info on it As im a newb to motorcycle/scooter mechanics. the only other thing that i could think of that would cause the rear wheel to completely lock and be very hard to turn and wont turn by hand is the brake system and a bearing.... Anyways help would be greatly appreciated from the pros are there any specialty tools that i will need for this project other than my standard automotive set Im so excited i get to break in my pink snap on power screw driver (with socket adapter of course) p.s. MY husband is fantastic and dished out all the dough for my scooter as a gift he asked me to post this here as his recognition and payment I will post an update with photos as soon as i email them to myself lol ~tchao

It sounds like the belt is broke and jammed up in there. It could be that the clutch nut came off and jammed against the cover. Either way you have to remove the CVT cover to see what it looks like in there. An impact wrench will come in handy to remove the clutch and variator.
Welcome to the board and good luck on your project.

I would drain the final drive oil out it, and see if you got metal shavings in there. Theres not much in there, a pint or so of hypoid oil. I'm just a tinkering type of mechanic. I'd also suggest you try and get a full service manual, for or as close to your machine as you can. When I got my BigRuckus, the first purchase was a service manual, and it's saved me tons of money, for those mechanically inclined. Have fun with it, it's just plastic and steel, and aluminum, all fixable or replaceable.

I've got a 2008 260 that has a mechanical history which I've worked on for 13K miles. Get rid of all the liquids, brakes, trans oil, cooling and replace them all. The CVT is easy to work on - You may need an electric or air operated impact wrench and a tool to hold the variator in place which can be easily made. Parts can be bought at BMS in california. any questions feel free to reply Max

Oh yes I will be replacing all the fluids the brakes are a good idea as well! Im so excited about my scooter I feel a little blindsided : P cheapeto is there a specific place I should look for a manual there is a Yamaha store close by would the Yamaha manual work for this scoot since it's a clone of Yamaha. Yea on my day off I will be removing the cvt cover and looking I do have a belt for it. But I will probably replace the clutch and bell housing and pulley if it remotely looks burnt I hate the clutch smell :/ I'm so excited about y'all replying and really super appreciate your input I will be photo / video. Documenting everything I do that way I know what's done and if I need help y'all will know Est I've done and who knows maybe y'all will spot something in the photos or videos that I don't see.

I bought it from a private party. I paid 300 for it. The guy saw smoke and freaked and wanted out. I'm not afraid of a little work and figured it's not a bad buy for 300.

I have about $500 tied up in my Linhai 300, (made a great trade of a 150 for it) they are very nice bikes, you'll have to spend Jap money to come up with something better, and I don't know if they are 3xs as good to justify the 3x price difference.

Oh yea I didn't just blindly buy her because she was cheap I definitely did some research but honestly there aren't many bad things to say other than the fluids suck but that's any Chinese clone scoot. Hooray for fish oil. But for the price I really feel like I got a good deal.

So i went to the Yamaha dealership today, I was so excited! ;D I walk in I am admiring them all then I make my way over to the parts counter! I ask about a service manual for my scoot-scoot(my nick name for it ) I am then told that they do not offer a 260cc scooter so they would not have anything. The lady then calls another employee over and asked him. I was then belittled and basicly told i bought a cheap piece of junk. He made me feel about 2ft tall. He said that "its just a throw away scooter when they break" I was like what the heck!!!!!!!!!! I know I didn't buy a yamaha from them but have some respect in general. So now I am wondering if I really made a good decision buying this scooter or not. I love my scoot-scoot, but there is work that needs to be done to it. I do not believe the panels are lining up right. I have to figure out the clutch or starting issue. I had the battery tested today and it had a 53% charge and tested fine at a auto parts store. But I am a little concerned about jumping into wrenching on her without a manual of where this and that goes etc. Any suggestions? Still trying to find a manual for my scooter.... sigh Erika ps: sorry about the wall of txt I am just very upset after going to yamaha.

fishead, forget about that jerk at the dealer. Did he bother to tell you that Linhai is an OEM manufacturer for Yamaha and makes many of Yamaha's scooter parts, including engines?
Of course he didn't, 'cause he's a little college boy on commision.

Actually I mentioned the brand of my scooter and he didn't even know what linhai was which I thought was funny because I was aware that linhai did manufacture for Yamaha my husband and I both thought It was funny. It just upset me as to how closed kindred people can be I'm not upset at all about the clutch being out I expected it and planned for it but here is a question have any of you made your owngset or used a gasket maker the tube kind. I am thinking of doing this by either cutting or using thebgasket maker thoughts on this would be awesome and any tipster tricks you knight have

CVT cover? I wouldn't bother - the cover doesn't really need a gasket. About the only gaskets I would buy instead of make are the head gasket and exhaust gasket...

Sounds cool I'm thinking of modifying the cover I want to get a chrome bell housing for the clutch and cut a hole in the cvt cover would this affect the clutch performance? Or even help it worth airflow

Always remember a bolt is a bolt. It dosent mater if it is on a scooter or a plane it does the same thing. As far as how it goes back together, take pictures of it before and as you take it apart. I will warn you though as another automotive tech that the alunimum on these scooters is not as strong as it is on a car engine. It is very easy to strip the bolts out. I wouldnt recomend cuting a hole in the cvt cover, it is made to keep things out. As far as parts there are alot of places to get them online.

Thanks for the info on the cvt and the aluminium... I'm not being smart lass that is helpful I will be much more gentle I will say removing the cover was very simple the bolts weren't tight at all. I will look at the manual here is an okay shot of the bell housing you can't see it very well but it does have a purplish tint I will post some others later I'm borrowing an impact forma buddy to take off the the clutch components and I will take pictures of those I'm actually interested to see it because it looks like the clutch got so hot it melted and it looks like it melted to the bell housingnbut it's really hard to see. Is it bad that I think that it's inters sting that it melted? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using proboards Attachments:

I am wondering if the rear wheel is locked up. If it is only the clutch holding it or a bad bearing or gear failure. I frankly was expecting to see worse.
