Alleyoop I'm not exactly sure why, but I think for some reason the muffler mounting bolt keeps coming loose, & I tightened it up w/ a lock washer too.. Lock washers rarely vibrate loose.. I've always sworn by lock washers.. Any how it seems the mounting bolt come loose, then the weight of muffler vibrating & bouncing on the head pipe, it breaks at the weakest point. This time it broke at the transition & head pipe, just ahead of muffler.. All the transitions on the stock muffler are paper thin..
I only lost the nut, & spacer, but I'm not sure that I can save the exhaust or not because the material is so thin... I don't know, if I can find the right size material, I might be able to reconstruct the connection & transitions, but I'm afraid it'll cost more then it's worth, as far as this exhaust goes..

Dwild62, Well if you order a new muffler, it comes complete with a new head pipe gasket screws bolts etc... $126.00. Which one mounting bolt. The single one that holds the Bracket to the frame or the two that actually hold the muffler? Alleyoop

OK all you Trike Dawg's listen up!! I know it seems that I'm the only w/ the exhaust system breakage problem, but I think I've come up w/ a solution to the problem... both myself & Jrr think that solid mounting of the exhaust may be a contributing factor to the problem.. The breakage didn't begin until I welded the V-band clamps connecting the muffler to the head pipe, which leads me to believe there's no give in the exhaust... The engine is mount on rubber bushings, the head pipe in fastened to engine & the muffler is mounted to the swing frame, which means the engine can move but the exhaust can not... The stock muffler is held to head pipe w/ springs, which allows for some movement..
So the solution is to mount the muffler totally to the engine, rather than the swing frame.. There is 2 open threaded bolt holes on the gear box at top just above the drive sprocket & an unused rubber bushed engine mount at the bottom of the drive sprocket on the bottom of gear box... So the solution would be to fabricate brackets to mount to these holes I just mentioned & extend out to the muffler, & mount muffler to these brackets.. Now the exhaust would be solid & move w/ engine...
Alley, maybe you could look this over & give me your thought...

Dwild62, Makes a lot of since and I will look at that setup tomorrow. Oh and by the way I was just googling around and found this about the Keihin Carbs we have. If this chart is true then we are running with very restricted carbs to pass the emissions for the EPA. Let me know what anyone thinks about this chart and what SHOULD be the Standard Main Jet and Pilot Jet on our carbs. Alleyoop www.keihin-us.com/pe.htm

Yo Dawg's The BEAR is on the move again, hopefully more than 5 miles this time.. Here's my Custom Muffler Mounting bracket that bolts to gear box instead of swing frame, I believe this will solve exhaust system breakage.. Exhaust is now mounted totally to the engine.. Will paint bracket in the spring when it's warmer.. Also check these metric mini drill bits for drilling jets.. David Sr.

COOL! Well I can see you hooked up to where the Chain Guard bracket mounts but then it looks like the bracket goes up and is bolted to some part of the frame that the engine is mounted on is that right? Then at the bottom it looks like you went under the chain guard and hooked it onto the casing. Is that right? Alleyoop

Dwild62, I believe the reason it broke and the bracket bolt kept coming loose is because you had the pipe and muffler hooked up with the V clamps which didn't allow for any give between the two pieces. So the only thing that could move is the bolt holding the bracket. And when you really tighten the sucker up it couldn't move and thats when it broke at the weakest point. Alleyoop

Alleyoop No, it doesn't bolt to frame at all, mounted totally to the gear box.. If you look at yours, there's 2 open threaded bolt holes on the top of the gear box, then on the bottom of gear box there's an unused rubber bushed engine mount.. I have the top end of bracket bolted to 1 of the threaded holes at the top of gear box, & the bottom end of bracket bolted to the engine mount at the bottom of the gear box.. So now the head pipe is bolted to the head & the muffler is bolted to the bracket that's bolted to the gear box, so it is solid to the engine & nothing else, now the exhaust can move w/ breaking..
What do you think of those jet drill bits cost me $14.. If you notice they are metric, so they match most of the jet sizes & then use # drill bits for in between sizes..

AHAH!!Now I see where you mounted it. Yea I saw those unused threaded bolts and was curious as to what they could be used for. Heck yea, now the muffler and engine will move as one, PRETTY SLICK MY MAN!!! I think earlier I said you were the FABRICATOR:) Are you able to use the Orginal Bracket that the Muffler mounted to with the TWO bolts?
Those mini drill bits are cool!! you have just about every size you will ever need:)
You know what I am going to get I am getting the Same tires we currently have but the taller ones. The current ones are 18.5x10-10 the taller ones are 21.8x10-10, 3.3 inchs bigger. So I should easly pick up 10mph more WATCH OUT 60+MILES PER HOUR:) Now here is a question for you. I can get them in Medium or Firm Rubber Compound. I guess the Medium would give me a smoother ride what DO YOU THINK? Alleyoop

Alleyoop I'm thinking maybe the medium compound, for hot or wet pavement, but don't know what the wear would be.. Might want to givem a call, they might have the answers..
Hurry up & get those tires so I can see the results!! I'm thinking only 5 - 8 mph more at most..
I have to say, I have a hard enough time getting on the BEAR now, I can just see me trying to get on w/ larger tires, but I do like the idea though..
I wonder if I get a higher profile tire for the front, if that would make my speedo closer to actual speed (not so far off)?? What's your thought?
I'll probably work on the BEAR & watch the ball drop on the boob tub in the shop tonight.. My wife is in North Pole, Alaska visiting my son #2 and his newly born baby girl.. I ain't paying $1,000.00 to fly on a plane that I can't control, & might crash or blow up..
Hope you have a great NEW YEAR David Sr.

Greenhorns, Its pretty straight forward, but Dwild62 has the same Trike you ordered so it may be a little different than mine. But anywhos, here how they usually are: 1. On the Right Handgrip, You would have Three switchs: The BIG RED on top is your KILL SWITCH, if its on the off position it will crank but will NOT START. Right below it is your Light switch that turns on your instrument panel lights and headlights. Below that is your Electrec Start Switch, Put the Key on the ON position Squeeze the Brake handle on your Left Handgrip and Press to start. 2. On the Left Handgrip you have 4 switchs: The one in FRONT FLASHES the headlights like for passing or signaling someone to go before you go. The Big Gray one on top if for your Headlights LOW and HIGH BEAM. The one below that is Your Turn Signals, You push the switch right and left, now to cancel the turn signal you PUSH THE SWITCH IN. Below that is your HORN.
Those are the swiths on mine. If yours has the same number of switchs thats what they do. Hope that helps Alleyoop

Dwild62, Since I CANNOT bring my GOOD LEG up high enough to go over the HUMP in the middle What I do is SIT on the SEAT and them swing my GOOD LEG over the HUMP works great and its Very Easy. Same when getting off I Swing my GOOD LEG over the HUMP and I am off:) The 1 1/2 inch raise in the rear I don't think it will be even noticeable. And yes, I think it will at least 5 more mph like you said 5-8 more mph. But thats GOOD now I will be able to CRUIZE at 55 if I need to:)
Hope your wife took plenty of warm cloths its brutal up there:) Alleyoop

wolfhound & Alley Yee Haa!! ;D, hay for a suicidal sick puppy, I got 2 thumbs up driving in town today!! Did maybe 15 miles or so.. Had to use my STATE of the ART THUMB WIPERS so I could see where I was going.. I need to mount one of JRR's computer fans in my helmet for a defroster too.. Clothing: complete long johns, normal cloths, leather chaps, leather thinsulate Attic lined motorcycle coat, leather face mask w/ neck guard, open face knit ski hat, thinsulate lined motorcycle gloves w/ brown Jersey gloves inside, regular socks, & leather steel toe work boots, & open face 3/4 shell helmet w/ shield.. I was snug as a bug, the coldest thing was my finger tips & my toes.. Not sure but I might still need to go 1 up on the pilot jet (#42).. Had to open the mixture screw to 2 1/2 turns open, cause after it got good & warm I lost the throttle response at the vary bottom.. I was getting as high as 9,400 rpm going down the highway, but not constant though. Guess I should think about going up a gram or 2 on the weights.. No exhaust system breakage!! Problem Solved!! Dwild62, YOU DA MAN RIDING IN THIS COLD!! But at least you were dressed for it. Yes, did you every take a look at aht Carb Chart from Keihin, the standard jets for the 24mm carbs they say are #130 Main Jet and a #52 Pilot Jet.
WOW! you had that sucker cranking at 9,400 RPMS what was your speed at those rpms? What grams are you currently running with to get that high of RPMS? Alleyoop

|
|
Post by WildMan on Dec 31, 2009 19:18:39 GMT -5
Alleyoop Well, not as fast as you'd think at 9,400 rpm.. The roads are a little snowy & a little slushy, so it may have been enough drag to keep drive belt from climbing up the variator w/ only 10 gr weights, that my guess anyways.. Might put 11 gr or 12 gr back in..

Dwidl62, Wow! that mini Chuck is small HEHE:)
David Sr. You mean to tell me your still running with 10G wieghts. Are you running a Prodigy Vairator or Stock? You have to try the 11g or 12g. I am running 12G Sliders with the Prodigy Vairator and it runs 7200-7300 rpms at WOT. I ordered 11G Sliders and got them ready, when the weather gets good I am going to try 11.5 combo of SLiders 3-11s and 3-12s to get my RPMS up around 7500 the Max Power Band for our engines. It also will help with the taller tires I will have on:) Yep with the 10G rollers your belt is not climbing to the top for max speed. Alleyoop

Carb Chart from Keihin, the standard jets for the 24mm carbs they say are #130 Main Jet and a #52 Pilot Jet. Just because a chart says that a certain carburetor comes standard with these size jets has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not those jets will be the correct ones for use with a given vehicle. Jetting is done on an individual vehicle basis, taking into account the installed equipment and "typical" riding environment. The carburetor for a given vehicle are rejetted at the factory to work for THAT vehicle - not what the manufacturer of the carburetor creates them with. Now an entire other discussion can be made surrounding emissions and the fact that most scooter/buggy/whatever manufacturers typically jet towards the leaner side, but that doesn't change the fact that switching to a 52 pilot jet and 130 main jet on your stock setup will make the scooter run terrible since the vehicle's components won't handle that kind of fuel supply in a stock condition. Bottom line: you change the jets only when necessary to rebalance your air/fuel mixture. You don't do it just because, and bigger is most definitely NOT better when it comes to these engines. I've had MANY conversations/borderline arguments with "car engine experts" who are used to setting a carb up however they like and just blowing through it who can't figure out why that strategy doesn't work with these smaller engines. If you've modified your air/fuel system, jet it for YOUR setup, and no one else's. And BTW: the pilot jet in the stock 24mm Keihin carbs we have in stock are 28mm in length and exact matches for all of the other pilot jets we've got in stock. There are MANY different types of Keihin carbs, and over a dozen flavors of main and pilot jets for the different carbs. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples.

Post by als01seville on Jan 1, 2010 16:31:39 GMT -5
bpnwmike, don't disagree with you, but when the company that makes the Keihin Carbs puts up a chart for the different carbs they make and chart the size jets that are supposed to be standard for each. Then you have to ask yourself why are the jets in the Keihin Carb that came with the product has different size jets. And quite a bit smaller than what they say is the standard size I might I add. Now it could be where they make them its hotter than an oven and the standard size specified by Keihin is to big.
And jetting for your setup is fine, but NOBODY can tell you if you just change your filter to a free flow filter what jet you will need. The gambit on just changing the filter runs from 115-130 and I am talking about same product same environment same carb. So we are supposed to spend all that time and money trying every jet and wind up with one and the rest use as ornaments. Good for the seller not so good for the buyer, don't you think. Alleyoop

YO Alley How's the Chicago weather man!!?? We're in the middle of a snow storm here in Wolcott, NY, you know that lake affect.. Got 12" last night & still snowing, they say we could see another 18" - 24"..
I took the BEAR on a 25 -30 mile run today on snow covered roads & laxed plowing in some places, & 11 deg.,, FUN, FUN!!! Wonder what that makes the wind chill?? Well maybe better not knowing... I'll tell ya though a lot of people do a lot of looking when I go by.. We have a State Trail that goes a long the length of SR 104 for recreational vehicles, so I was waving to all the snowmobilers as I went by, & they were waving & looking, & looking..
I was having fun, me & my 150cc snow shoes came back in one piece, but my son & MY truck DID NOT.. Son (the BRAT) is OK, but he nicely TOTALED my truck.....................................
Got my muffler today, & ordered another $50. worth of jets today..

Dwild62, YOU CRAZY NUT:) Man you got some balls going riding in that weather. Another 18"-24" holy smokes!!!! that is a lot of snow. I can imagine the people looking and looking saying what the heck is he riding:) We got snow 3 days ago, everything is covered with snow but the streets are dry. We just got the Frigid temps straight from Canada and right now 3% and not much wind. But in this weather you will get frost bite in 10 minutes.
Sorry to hear about your truck but that your son is ok.
How is the trike running, know you cannot open her up, but with the UNI and bigger main jet did it give the engine more UMP or about the same?
When you put the New Muffler on take pictures and SOUND.
Now why do you need $50.00 worth of jets? I thought the #130 was good and that just the #40 Pilot Jet was to small. Alleyoop
