thanks for the vote of confidence harry.....but i got a way to go yet......prior to my retirement i was an educator and a industrial psychologist.....like janitor in a drum...lol....i spent most of my career developing and validating(skilled craft)entrance level tests and job performance upgrade tests for a local utility company.....for electricians, utility mechanics , automotive mechanics....gas boiler repairmen...and appliance repairmen..etc.
my real expertise was knowing how to develop these tests in accordance with federal regs on employment selection and placement tests....that was my real expertise......i spent hundres if not thousands of hours with subject matter experts (job analyses)...usually with grad1 one mechanics and specialists........they were the real experts...just watching these folks made you appreciate its a combination of science with a bit of artful deployment......much like what you see in the performing arts...when they are in a groove...
theory is one thing.....applying theory and knowledge successfully is a completely different cognitive skill set......in the old days we simply called it hands on capability......in my own work what separated a true top notch mechanic from an ok" remove and replace" general utility mechanic...was the far greater superior diagnostic skills of the top notch mechanic.....
another way of looking at it is....there are those who don't know and know they don't know......those who know and can do what they know...and than those who don't know they don't know...this last group ...can be down right dangerous...if not careful....both to themselves and others so far and for the most part i have managed to keep myself out of the last category.....so i guess i am making some progress.....

It's getting closer to spring time and time to start thinking about scooters again. I got my tax refund so ordered a belt from HyosungSource.com. Also ordered the clutch cover gasket, but they have the wrong part listed for that, they show part #11483HP7600, when the actual part number is #11485HP7601. So have a gasket that I can't use. Was wondering if anyone knows how long these belts usually last. I have 6100 miles on my scooter, am thinking it should last for several thousand more miles yet, but should take the cover off and inspect it this year anyway.
Also noticed the price of the belt went up since I ordered it last week. It was $97.68, now it is showing $108.40. Still cheaper than anywhere here in the USA.

Thanks for the info Wayne. Spring is coming. I actually took the scoot out for a ride the other day. I've now ridden in every month of the year. Ride safe!

hey wayne....are you getting that part from hyosungsource.com? Yep, I ordered the belt and clutch cover gasket and an air filter last week, they shipped it on the 17th and I got it on the 22nd. The gasket was the wrong part though. Even with the $30 shipping cost it was still cheaper than anywhere I could get it over here.

Except for length the belt it is almost identical to a Silverwing Belt.(maybe a mm difference in the width). I got 14K of two up riding out of my Silverwing Belt and only changed it because I'm planning an 8K trip this summer. It was still 'within spec'. I've got 8K on the original Xpeed belt.

ok, harry, nobody seems to be biting. it didn't get by me, though. 8k this summer? that covers a lotta territory. unless you are going up the alcan to the arctic circle, you are planning quite a chunk of the homeland, that could easily include the crossroads of the USA, I80&I35 in iowa. if you do, maybe i could ride a distance with you. i'd ask you to stay with us, but our daughter is going to be back home for the summer, in the guest room. you pretty much have to be either headed for the east coast or the gulf coast to get that kind of mileage in. so, where ya going? prof, i got a winter like that in a few years ago. this winter...........wow! i've been able to ride more days EVERY month than not. usually i fill my bikes before winter to retard condensation in the tank, and run them a few times during the winter to keep the battery up. this is the first year i've ever had to add gas...........not once, but i've had to fill the sportster 4 times! what a winter!

Smoke - I love it! Can't wait for better weather so I can get the boat in the water. The lake's drawn down for weed control and is slowly coming back up - too little snow and rain for the March 1 filled date. High's are supposed to hit 60+ later this week.
Harry - if you come east - drop me a pm.

ok, harry, nobody seems to be biting. it didn't get by me, though. 8k this summer? Sea to Shining Sea. Seattle, Washington to Eastport ,Maine via the 'Highline'...US Route 2 to Trans Canada Highway then picking US 2 back up in Vermont onward to Maine..then ride around New England a bit and come back via Niagra Falls then pick up US 18 around Madison, Wisconsin to Mt Rushmore then zig-zag Northwest until we pickup US 12 and head home. It's about 3,200 miles outbound then 3,600 miles back plus side trips. My Mrs's bought a big 4'x8' wall map for X-mas and wrote to the various State Tourism Bureau's for brochures. Lot's of 'side trips' are marked out on the map.

ok, well, that's close enough that i might be able to ride up to mason city and have a sandwich with ya, or just meet up and shake your hand. maybe i can even get breeze71 to ride up with me. just outta curiosity, why did you choose hwy18? not that it's probably not a good ride.............but for example, in rapid city, you're gonna come in to the south of the badlands. you can't come that far, and miss out on the badlands national park. in iowa, about all you're gonna see is clear lake, and the hobo capital of the world, Britt, iowa. who knows, maybe you'll be coming through there while the hobo convention is going on.
so, this is a pretty big pinch o chew, here. are you guys riding two up, or is mama ridin' the yager? might be a good time to break her in on the xpeed?
it doesn't sound like you'll be so far away from ccprof that he couldn't meet up with you somewhere along the way, too. when are you planning this excursion?

Sounds like a great trip you got planned there Harry. Would love to hear about it in a ride report. With family in Chicago, we have looked at riding highway 2 across to Wisconsin. Have rode highway 2 out to Browning Montanna, and is a very scooter friendly route. Do to some health issues for my wife, long scooter trips are out for us. We still plan on taking long bike trips though. 2up on a SYM RV250 with our bags would seriously overload the scooter, if we could get it all loaded on it. And the KZ100P has plenty of power, but not comfortable for 2up long distance. So two weeks ago bought a 2010 Goldwing for us to ride long distances, matter of fact bought it near you at I-90 motorsports in Issaquah. Still got our scooters for more local travel, she still loves to ride solo, just cant do the long distance stuff. Good luck with your trip.

Smoke - maybe you saw this on Scooter Doc or Scooter Prof.
Wed. was nice and sunny and a bit cool. I needed to run into town and go to the library. At 10 AM it was 55 degrees so I decided to ride the scoot. I put the pony express bags on the scoot and loaded up. I decided to take the back road due to the pipeline construction on the main road.
The other day, I was coming back from the dentist up at the construction site. I saw this person running toward the road and it looked like she wasn't going to stop and I'd hit her. I managed to brake down and so did she. When I was past, I looked in the mirror and saw her run into a porta-potty. I guess when you gotta go, you gotta go.
Anyhow, I'm ripping down the back road at about 40 mph yesterday and come into a little dip and blind curve. There's a turkey vulture in the road. He takes off and just as I get to where he was, his buddy takes off out of the bushes. All of a sudden, I'm looking at a bird with a 6 foot wingspan a couple feet in front of the windshield. We missed each other, thank the Good Lord, but talk about a cardiac check.
I made it to town without further incident.
When I was coming home, I came up on one of the local farms. All of a sudden, a herd of free-range chickens runs into the road and panics when they see me and are running around in circles flapping wings. Missed them too. Note - I DID have chicken for dinner.
I've been busy trying to get the yard in shape. Lots of mulching pruning etc. I trimmed the forsythia last week and it was 87 degrees by the time I was done. Then we had some cold weather here too. More yard work today. It's been really dry. The lake is usually full full by 3/1 but it's still about 1 1/2 feet down. I put my boat in so I good get a slip at the dock but haven't been out fishing yet - too shallow.
I tilled the my new garden a couple of weeks ago. Picked up a deer tick and had to go get antibiotic treatment. I need to get the veggies planted in a couple weeks. Other plants are starting to bloom. The pollen is horrible this year.

no i hadn't seen that anywhere else. i was just kidding you because the day i wrote that, it was snowing in most of pennsylvania. maybe it missed you?
you sure have had your share of close calls already this year. last year, while out riding in some rural areas around here, i came upon a small residential street off the highway that i was on. on that street was a dead tree with a vulture sittin in it. so, i wheeled down that street and stopped to watch him for a while to see if he would take off. my wife is the birder in the family, but she has got me a little more interested in them. i sat there watching for quite a while before getting the creepy feeling that he was watching me back. i was on the sportster and i thought that if i started it and revved it, the darn thing would take flight. he was a large one. i'd seen him in the tree a quarter mile away. well, he just sat there, looking at me. finally, he must have lost patience with me, and stood up straight, and spread his wings and just stood there looking at me. at that point, i thought he was going to swoop down and claw at me with his dead carcass handling talons, and i blinked first. wheeled around and left the street, looking back over my shoulder, he was still standing there with his wings outstretched. so, lesson learned, eagles may soar with harleys, but vultures aren't impressed.
this thread has slowed way down. is that where everybody went - scooter doc?

Snow??? The last measurable snow we had was at Halloween. It's actually gottne colder in April than March. We had frost last night.
Birds - we've got em. Back in February, we had a die-off of the gizzard shad and the lake never froze over. At the peak, we had 52 bald eagles on our 250 acre lake. Now just a few. Our feeders were have been busy especially the suet. We have 5 different kinds of woodpeckers coming plus all the regular birds. The ospreys and heron have been back for a couple weeks. The hummingbirds showed up the other day.
Where'd everyone go? Beats me. A few are on Scooter Doc, some of the same on Scooter Professor.
Take care!

It has been a while since my last post. I just got my Scoot reinspected and realized how little I had been riding it. Mostly riding my Yamaha the past year. I think I put 200mi since the the last inspection. I had be contemplating selling her but riding too and from the bike shop I was thinking about how nice the scoot rides... One of my main frustrations with the scoot has been the gas fill. So I am thinking to sell or not to sell...hard to sell when you have to explain how careful you have to be when filling. I have only filled with a gas can after many a bad experience at the pump. So then I have this thought what if I take out that little plastic bar that stops you from putting the gas nozzle further into the fill pipe. Not sure if I could cut it out, or what, but if I am not riding it and not selling it what do I have to loose. right? I was too lazy to do it right and take of the panels and take the cup out. So I figured I would cut it out while on the bike. First I tried some cutter tool, but I think what I thought was just thin bar(stick) was went deeper and I could not cut through. I did not want to saw it as I still had the fill hose connected and did not want plastic particles in the gas tank. Then I decided a solder iron might do the trick. So while holding on to the bar with needle nose pliers, so as not to let it drop into the tank, I slowly melted it away and pulled it out. Again went much deeper (about a quarter inch or less) than I thought, and even with solder iron a little tough to get out. But I did it.
Now the fill-up. When to my local station, one where I had spilled gas all over the scoot in the past. Put the nozzle in; this time nozzle can go all the way to the plastic circle on the pump. Just like my truck. I pump as slow as the pump will allow, no gas is spewing anywhere. Am I dreaming? I knew I needed about 1.5 gallons, as I got close I am thinking should I stop or wait for the auto shutoff? I'll risk it. Click it stops on its own. No spewing, no splashing. Victory!!! Turn the scoot on, all gas bars are filled! I took the long way home, ridding about 7mi before putting back in the garage. Gas meter still registering full. I think my MS3 may find its way back into my work commute now. Gas fill problem solved.

hey, dirt! glad somebody finally tried it! if you've read this whole thread, you probably know what was said earlier about this. the only thing i could figure is that they built in a discouragement to the ham-fisted gorillas that would ram the nozzle in there and then lean on it while trying to hustle the chick at the next pump on a vespa. since the tube is plastic all the way down, it wouldn't be long before there would be a nice crack in it.....and that could be potentially catastrophic.
with the experience of filling it many times, it seems that if they'd just recessed it about an inch more, it would make a world of difference and we probably wouldn't be complaining about it.
ride safe.

Looking for front and rear tires for my xspeed 250i. I am to lazy to search the whole post. Thinking about shinko 120/70-13 sr567 front & 140/60-14 sr568 rear. What would this post suggest? When I went to ebay and checked these tires out the site says not compatible with my scooter model?

Follow up. I did not like the orginal tires that came with the bike I had a lot of trouble in the rain because the bike wanted to hydroplane and was dangerous to ride above 35 mph. I got 5500 miles on the orginal tires but would like to change them out.

I bought a new Michelin for my UM 250 at Motorcycle Superstore. Can't remember what I paid for it. They shipped it pretty fast.

These scooters are a different breed. Mine has been reliable while others, not so much. Make sure you have someone who can work on a computerized fuel injected scooter. I love mine. I'm pushing 9,000 miles with no problems.

I've got 8600 miles on mine so far and still running great. I replaced my tires at 5500 miles also, was looking for my receipt but can't find it anywhere. I put shinko's back on mine, they had pretty good reviews at motorcycle-superstore. I can't find the number on the tire but I think they are probably the 567 and 568. They seem to be wearing better than the original tires. I've got some big cracks in the plastic on my scooter on the right side by the glove compartment, don't know where they came from, just went out to the garage one day to get the scooter out and noticed the cracks. I've found out it is a real pain to change the antifreeze in these things and get all of the air bubbles out, a time consuming process.
