jj,
if you open up the carb/EFI access cover under the seat...as look towards the rear of the bike you will see two screws...one is the throttle stop screw and the other is the idle speed screw.
Like I said...on the bottom of page one of this thread Jaxco posted a link to the tech manual. Big Download...257 pages...but it will have a picture of which is which.

Rode 2 up for the first time yesterday afternoon. Didn't go very far. Did a couple stops, turns, a slight a hill with a curve. Had to swerve a little to miss a dead bunny. My wife said she was scared but didn't say get rid of the jacket and helmet I bought her.

Congrats Astorprof!!!
You might want to consider taking the MSF Experienced Riders Course together. You are allowed to have a passenger in the ERC if you already have your license.

Thanks Harry. We're taking this 1 step (or 1 mile) at a time. It took a year to get her back there. I'm aware of the ERC (it's free in PA). There's 1 class left at the end of August that I may try to get into. Summer's going way too fast. We took a brief break this week but had my daughter's Vegas wedding in June and a picnic/reception back here on the 12th with all the associated chaos. Friday I said enough is enough and went fishing for a couple hours. This week, she had to go back to work even though she's "off" for the Summer. Tomorrow she has a meeting about 45 minutes away. I'll go along and fish some water I haven't fished in at least 20 years. Thursday, another meeting 140 miles away in Harrisburg. I'll go along and have lunch with some old coworkers. We may stay at a resort down there for a few days. She has to be back at work full time Mid-August then we both start classes again on the 22nd. I'm busier now that I'm "retired" than I was when I was working full time. Somewhere in there I need to get the scoot out to the dealer's for warranty service.
How's your wife? I hope she's doing better.

Give her my best too.
I'd really like to see how the Xpeed stacks up against my SYM. The Xpeed is supposed to have more power (20 vs 25 HP), but I find the power and speed of the SYM to be amazing. The handling is superb. That and all the bells and whistles on the SYM, well, it would be interesting to make a side-by-side comparison. Gary
PS: I know, I'm welcome to drive up there any time ....

Gary,
Thanks for the well wishes for the mrs's.
I test rode a Sym RV250. Nice bike. I had misgivings about the quality of the dealers mechanic which put me into extended 'sleep on it' mode. Overall I would say the Sym was a more 'refined' bike. Has a bit more legroom. The exhaust on the Xpeed is fairly loud. The powerband seems a bit narrower to me. Not really rocket science...one can put in a camshaft that produces a wider power curve or a narrower higher power curve. The 'area under the curve' remains the same. The guy who designed the fuel filler neck on the Xpeed needs to be taken out and shot. I definitely like EFI over a carb. I can feel altitude changes in the throttle response on the Bali.

Thanks Harry. I think the same guy designed the fuel filler on the SYM. The neck is almost horizontal. And the locking gas cap that opens by turning the key in the ignition is a cute feature, but probably will be expensive to fix if/when it breaks. I like the EFI on the Xpeed and I like the flat floor.
Its a world of compromises.

I take it back about the SYM. If I just push the nozzle in and let it shut off normally, it works pretty good. Sorry guys.

I take it back about the SYM. If I just push the nozzle in and let it shut off normally, it works pretty good. Sorry guys. Just to explain..... There is maybe a two foot tube between the gas cap and the tank...maybe 1" in diameter with some sort of 'guard' in it. The tube is too narrow for 'fast mode' on the pump. If you squeeze fully on the fuel pump you end up with gasoline everywhere. Now fuel station owners want folks to be able to buy as much gas as possible in the shortest period of time...so they jack the pressure on their fuel pumps. This is all fine and dandy on a busy day when all the pumps are in constant use. But if you pull in with your Xpeed on a slow day then even the 'slow mode' on the pump is too fast. I've learned my lesson...and unless it's an absolute emergency I won't pull into a gas station where I'm going to be the only customer.

The drive belt is pricey. I paid $190. jj may have found a cheaper source of parts. There isn't a 'lifetime' on the belt, it's an every 2,400 mile inspection item.
The service limit on the drive belt is 22.5mm wide.
I inspected mine at 4,800 miles and is was still above 23mm.
jaxco posted a link to the factory service manual on page 1 or 2 of this thread.

OK friends. It was a perfect morning for a ride. Not hot, not cold, no sun glare. I had some errands to run so I thought I'd take the Xpeed up thru the Suicide Strip (Walmart & other stores) to the mailbox, the college and then Walmart. I hit the stop at the bottom of the street and there were 2 old ladies (hey I'm old & retired and they were really old) walking. I said "good morning" and the one proceeds to thank me for wearing a helmet. Dropped the mail in the box, went and paid the water bill and headed up to campus to drop off papers for Dr. Mom. Ran into a friend who asked about the scoot. I took him out to show him and he commented what a sharp looking ride it was. As I was getting ready to leave, a minivan with a young woman and her daughter who was maybe 8 or 9 pulls in beside me. The kid looks at me, gives 2 thumbs up and says "that's a really nice motorcycle". I thanked her. Got to W-mart, got the hamburger buns and go out to the scoot. I'm putting my jacket & helmet on and an older couple is walking thru the lot. They stop, look it over and the lady says "That's a really great looking bike". Wow - 3 compliments on my ride in 1 morning!
Show your rides - maybe we can make some converts! Ride Safe!

Harry quoted in another thread that he has a back up v belt my question is that the v belt you are using as your back up does it go bad over time not using it? Maybe in the many years time frame.

Harry - I see you're having record "brutal heat" out there. Send some our way. 60's and 70's are great for riding but I'd really like to use my pool before the end of summer. Been in 3 times and the warmest water temp was 73. Wife won't go in.

jp,
the numbers on the belt are 25.2X881 made by mitsuboshi. It doesn't measure 25.2 wide on the calipers though..closer to 23.5.
The belt is double cogged..I.E. Cogs top and bottom similar to Gates Xtreme Recreation belts.
Gregg at sunl-parts prices are pretty good..I'd be amazed is he could offer a double cogged kevlar belt for $36.50. Double that would still be a really good price.
A Mistuboshi kevlar double cogged belt for a Silverwing goes for $125 discounted.

By all means please - enquiring minds want to know! As much as I love my MS3 - the price of the belts is pretty steep. I'm no where needing one now but sooner or later I will.
BTW, what weight rollers or sliders would replace the OEM parts? I know they are 23X18 but haven't come across any weight references. Sooner or later they wear out too.

Since the original intent of this thread is for the Unitied Motors Xpeed 250i experience I'll jump in with my experience with the Hyosung MS3 - same scooter, different name.
I purchased my scooter used with 1205 miles on it and my first riding experience with it was thw 100 mile trip home from Hot Springs, AR to Camden, AR via Hwy 7. Considering that all my previous scooter riding was on a Honda Ruckus, that was quite a jump up. It's not comparing apples and oranges so much as apples and watermelons.
After putting about 500 mile on the MS3 it developed a clatter when engaging the starter so back to Hot Springs we went where it was determined that the starter clutch had a couple of teeth broken. It was repaired under warranty (still have about a year of warranty left) and I was told that Hyosung has been having problems with that particular part and are replacing it with a heavier design. The only other problem I have had is with the plastic front leg shield and leg shield cover cracking. This looks like the scooter may have suffered some trauma that wasn't apparent when I purchased it and didn't crack out into an exposed area until it was ridden enough for vibration and road bumps to extend the damage. A mechanically inclined friend and I repaired the damage with epoxy, fiberglass bondo, and spray paint. No big deal, just a cosmetic nuisance I didn't want to get bigger.
Performance is great! The machine starts easily and I have had it up to 81.7 mph as measured on level ground with GPS. I weigh about 245 lb and the speed was still creeping up when I shut down to accomodate a curve and oncoming traffic. MPG so far has ranged from a low of 66 mpg to a high of 73 mpg with a consistent average around 69/70 mpg. I have run 87 and 91 octane and have not noticed any difference in performance but have not done any controlled rides to check, so take that info for what its worth.
The scoot seems stable and controlled on the road with buffeting from the big trucks and other traffic more of a nuisance than a real hazard but keep in mind that I am not a very experienced scooter rider. I do think that Hyosung needs to come out with a better windshield or at least someone needs to develop a bigger aftermarket windshield. Just a couple of inches taller and maybe a little wider would probably do wonders. I'm only 5' 8" and I do get a good bit of helmet buffeting.
The scooter rides cool. In high 90's to 100 degree plus weather it routinely stays at 2 bars on the temperature gauge and only goes to 3 bars on 1. high speed runs; 2. riding during the very hottest part of the day (2:00p - 5:00p) or; 3. extended idling. When I bought it the dealer changed all the fluids and used Amsoil 10w40. I recently changed the oil and switched to Castrol 5W50 and the bike seems to run even cooler - the bike go about twice as far after a cold start to get to 2 bars than before. Next oil change I'm going to switch to Delvac or Rotella 5w40 commercial oil and see what happens.
Overall I am very pleased with the MS3. It's fast, responsive, and economical. The dealer I purchased it from and Hyosung have been very good with no hassle warranty work. The only real aggarvation I have is with the dearth of aftermarket maintainence and accesory items. If Hyosung would come out with a 400cc class EFI machine with a little more attention to the tupperware and ergonomics I think I'd have to seriously consider moving up.
For the price range I don't think you can beat the deal of the MS3/Xpeed 250i.
BTW, have any of you noticed how a lot of people seem to hate being passed by a scooter? LOL

ouachita - nice post - have a bone. I bought mine with 440 miles on it. The original owner has an extension put on the windshield. The pic is at the bottom of page 13 in the show and tell forum where everybody posts a picture. It does help although it looks a little different. My gripe is that the little triangle shaped pieces of fairing under it tend to pop out now. BTW - I'm 5'11".
jp321 - nice pic.
