Hi Chris. My Lance Phoenix is due at ScootersPlus in around 10 days! Then perhaps I'll qualify as a scooter enthusiast! Neuro

Interesting. I don't have a scooter yet, and I'm not in Memphis area; but when I do I will be passing through regularly. I saw Scooters Plus and their exceptionally bad Web site, so I didn't take them seriously. Please keep up posted on how it goes.

I am in Memphis as well. Looked at Scooters Plus website and called them on the phone. I was not impressed. I went to their Millington store (no longer in business) and could not even get waited on while the little teenies that were working there were busy talking.
There is somebody in Collierville selling something called a Komoto scooter but I can't find anything about them so I am VERY leery.
Anyway, still looking at the United Motors 170 from the Polaris dealer on Kirby-Whitten.

Frankly I wonder what brand names of Chinese scooters really mean ... from what I can tell, they seem to be no more than variations on a theme, like in American cars, where the whole GM line is sold under numerous names. The GM cars (Saturn being an exception) are basically alike. A Mercury is a higher-priced Ford with perhaps a few extra bells and whistles. Dodge = Chrysler, and so on.
If you have time, you ought to call those folks in Collierville. I intend to. I at least want to see what they have.
If you can find a good small (owner works there) bike shop, I bet you can persuade them to do your tinkering for you. But as I suggested in the other thread, I think you want a Japanese ride.

Yeah, I was not impressed with Scooters Plus at all. I went to their Summer Ave. location before I ordered my scooter. I decided to go the drop shipped route and got my Lance GSR 150 from Scooters Factory.
I have been even less impressed with the availability of parts at Scooters Plus. I have not checked out Polaris yet. I will have to run down there sometime since it is close by my house.
Too bad Lance doesn't sell direct anymore.

I called the guy in Collierville today. Left a message and he called me back shortly after. He is a seller only. He told me that he is trying to make arrangements with a local shop to handle warranty work, but hasn't gotten anyone yet. He only sells 250s. The picture on Craigslist has the scoots parked in front of his house/garage.
It doesn't look like he has a store or a shop either.

Hello, I'm in New Albany, MS. about 75 miles down 78 HWY from you. There is a guy in Golden Ms. selling Peace 150s, He had some at the Tupelo Flea Market this weekend. I've had my scoot a week today a Linhai 300. I made a 500 mile round trip to south Mississippi to pick it up. This was his last 06 and he said when his 08s came in they would be $1000 more. Amory Marine, about 50 miles southeast of me is selling the Linhais under the Iron Mountain Motorsports name. When I called him he had a 07 for $3000 and the 08s were $3300. My 06 was $2499 plus tax. The Peace 150s the guy had at the flea market were $1650. Not many scoot dealers around and I didn't want to risk the internet drop shippers. BTW I think the outfit in Memphis you mentioned also has a store in Southhaven. I saw their website before I bought my scoot, its not very good.

I called Polaris yesterday just to see if they had an exhaust gasket that would work on my Lance, but the guy told me they don't sell anything for the Chinese scooters. He said they only have parts for United Motors scooters.
I called Scooters Plus after this to see if they had gotten any gaskets in stock because a week and a half ago they did not. They said they had one, so I picked it up yesterday.
Well, I get home hoping the gasket will fit in the spot on the exhaust header notched out for the gasket to fit in. However, the gasket is about 2-3mm too big. I called SP back, and their mechanic told me that these gaskets aren't really for the 150cc GY6 scooters, but they will work. He said it was a major pain in the a$$, but I had to put grease all around the gasket, then as I tighten the bolts on the flange it would pop into place.
Well, long story short, all that happened was the gasket did not pop into place. Instead, it flattened it completely. I removed it and tried to use needle nose pliers to shape it back, but it was a hopeless cause.
Oh well, I got to work today and noticed I received my replacement MRP gasket in the mail, so I will be putting this on tonight.

Well, I put the new gasket on last night, and everything is running great right now.
I noticed when I received the gasket that it looked like 2 pieces that were 1/16" thick and pressed together to make 1/8". They were already coming apart into 2 pieces so I made sure to use gasket sealer all around the edges and to make it stick to the flange so I could make sure it was lined up properly.
The gasket is for sure lined up this time, and the nuts tightened to the 0.9 kg/m(6.5 foot pounds) torque spec. So, hopefully I won't have anymore exhaust issues.

Slightly off the subject, but definitely relevant to Volunteer scooterists in Memphis: has anyone taken the Experienced Rider class offered at the Sw Tn CC? Seems like they only scheduled it once for this year, back in June. Maybe if some of us went together and asked, they'd offer it again? Does anyone here know the instructors thereof? Jackson State is having one in October, only their second offering of the year. Other than that it seems that Nashville is the closest place for this; I think they're having a class today (obviously too late to sign up now anyway.)

Southwest TN CC is offering the Experienced Riders Safety Course on Saturday October 4. It's a one day (6 hour) course for $75 (plus $25 lab fee!). I am going to register. You need to have at least 1000 mi or 6 months of experienced under your belt. Seeing as though I have put 350 miles on my scoot in the last 2 weeks, I think that will be no problem! I'd like to get some advice and instructions on emergency handling.

Hey Guys, Im glad to see that someone has started a local forum in Memphis. I also was wondering if anyone knows of any group rides. BTW, I took the beginner riders class at SW CC and I felt that it was very challenging, but also, so worth your time and money. I bought my Roketa 250 at the Scooter Store on Summer. I had checked them thru the BBB website, and at that time, they had a clean complaint record. They had had some complaints, but all had been addressed.

Lovetascoot2, Do you means Scooters Plus on Summer Ave? Good luck with your Roketa, I know you're enjoying the ride.
What kind of PDI did you and/or the dealer do on your new scoot? neuro

I wish we could find a critical mass of DIY scooterists to get together occasionally, giving demos of major repairs, mods, etc. neuro When I had my MR2 Spyder we had group mod parties almost every weekend. I was usually the guy doing the mods on all of our Spyders, but eventually everyone wanted to learn to do the mods themself. I really enjoyed getting together with other enthusiasts wanting to learn more about improving their rides. We formed a group called the Midsouth Spyders, which continues today. It would be nice to have something like this for scooters too since they are becoming a lot more popular. Chris

Hey Neuro, PDI was pretty much they started it, and it sat outside running while I finished the paperwork. The Warranty they gave me was 6 mths/engine. They did trailer it to my house for me. I am working on a couple of issues with it right now, one major one started just yday, but havent called them about it yet. I have a question on the 250 site and am hoping I can fix the prob myself, (since I dont have a truck/trailer to get it back to S P).

Hey Chris, I live around the Bartlett/Kirby Whitten area and on one Sunday, I saw 6 (3 girls-3 guys) in a matter of 15 mins. so I know they are out there. I'm not sure where you and Nitro are, but if you guys are close, maybe the 3 of us could start meeting up.

Lovetascoot2, which dealer did you buy your scoot from? I am in Scenic Hills (just off Warford Rd. exit 6).
Chris, I'd be interested in watching someone mod their intake/exhaust/carb jets if anyone ever gets around to it. Also would like to see a mod of the clutch and variator weights. I had the panels off this weekend and replaced all the rubber hoses, and upgraded the hose clamps. neuro

I'm new to the board, and the scooter world. I live in Tipton County, but work in Millington. I'm expecting my scooter (MC 54 250b) sometime soon. (it hasn't shipped yet) Just thought I'd say hello to the Memphis area people.

I got my Lance Phoenix from Scooters Plus too. They only had Roketa and BMS scooters in the showroom, but the Lance company had them listed as a dealer, so after doing some research on what I wanted I direct ordered the Phoenix through them. They met the lowest online price I could find. Not much in the way of PDI, but at least if I run into serious trouble that I can't handle I have a mechanic I can go to. And they will do the warranty work on the engine for 12 months.
Welcome to Scoot Dawg, Brad. I scoot out Raleigh Millington Road to Jones Orchard just about every weekend, partly for the peaches and partly just to get out onto the country roads with my scoot!

Hey Neuro. Sounds like my problem is that I need a new fuel pump (or carb). Ok, I only have 322 miles on it. I have to wonder what if anything this weather is playing in the way its acting. I ran fine until all this humidity came. Any thoughts?? BTW- im jealous that you guys live so close to Jones Orchards !!

I just bought a Chinese scooter made by Jonway. I'd like to get a scooter club/support group started in the area. I live in Southaven. I'm concerned about parts and service. I know! I should have considered that first.

My scooter should be here early next week, just in time for the rain! What's the procedure for getting the motorcycle endorsement in TN? Permit then License test? The wording makes it seem the permit is just for people under 16. I guess I could just call the DMV, but I figure one of you all has just gone through this recently. Hope to out there on the scoot soon! ;D

Since you're over 16 you'll be applying for the full endorsement, not the permit (under 16 and you're ineliglble for the license but can get a permit). You can take a MSF course (at Bumpus Harley or Southwest TN Comm College) and get a waiver of the DMV written and road tests, but there's quite a wait list for the basic MSF course. To get your license faster you can download the TN motorcycle regulations manual and study for the knowledge test. First pass the written test. Then take the road test (by appointment only... schedule this online now). While many states require you to pass several skills on the road test, all Shelby Co. requires you to do is show up with your scooter with temp tags or permanent tags, and ride it once around the DMV building without falling off! No kidding.
Don't ride the scoot to the DMV, you might get fined for driving without a license.
If you get your license this way (as I did), you might still want to take the basic course. I will be taking the experienced riders course at SW TN CC in October (requires you to have at least 6 months or 1000 miles of driving experience.
I have ridden 500 miles in 2.5 weeks, so I figure I'll have enough experience by Oct. 4!
Enjoy your scoot! neuro

Thanks, I'll have to get ready for that written test. I'll have to find a time to take the MSF course too. I've read some of the info on their website, lots of good stuff there!
