I remember when I first started to ride my scooter to work, just about everyone thought is was funny. Well...Friday everyone was complaining about how much their vehicles were costing them to drive to work. And as I walked by, I said 4 bucks a day, just 4 bucks a day, 20 bucks a week! Now I'm getting questions about this forum, were to buy a scooter, etc. Boy! when the pocket book takes a hit, people sure change their minds.
I just thought that was funny

Hey, I get that so often... scooters are either 'funny looking' or 'not real bikes'. then I tell them about running costs, the fun you have in traffic anytime, comfort and convenience.... they soon start to ponder and ask 'silly' questions about getting one themselves...

I am getting questions all the time. Stopped at a light to get on the interstate, car next to me rolls down the window and shouts out "what kind of milage", flip open the helmet shout out "67 mpg", light turns green and I'm off.
Friday, I was at a place for lunch. Sit down next to a group of guys and immediately start fielding questions from them. I spot a Goldwing pull up. An older "respectable" gentleman gets off, walks inside and spots me as the scooterist and starts chatting with me. Now here is this scene in vivid detail- I am the white guy with the pony tail who is probably some kinda hippie, chatting with a group of black men who seem to all be on some sort of work crew, and the 60+ gray haired comes in and starts chatting with me. The GW guy asks me about the milage I get and tells me he gets about half that and has been thinking about getting a scoot. He compliments me on the style of it and walks off. I tell the other guys about the nearby scooter shop and head out the door. Stop by to look over the Goldwing and think, "a gentleman like him deserves a nice ride like this, but it does look kinda heavy".
So yeah anyway, scooters cause strange social dynamics to occur.

You guys have seen pics of me I post them all the time. I am a large (fat) blue collar type who lives in jeans and a T-shirt with a flannel shirt over it if I'm riding or it's cold. Scooters are rare in Maine. More of a Harley crowd. That said I have been picked on good naturedly but never ridiculed. When riding I can count on several inquiries about the scoot, how much, mileage etc. This is especially true at the pump when I put in $5 worth. The Cadenza was really good at attracting attention and at 81 mpg had the #'s to impress people. Scooters just plain make you "approachable" by others. They break down barriers that have been erected over the years in our modern day world. Your not seen as a threat. It's a good thing and part of what drew me to the little beasts.

I have owned many motorcycles including a full dress Goldwing but I have to tell you, this is the least amount of money I have ever spent and I think I am having the most fun. Even my wife is starting to enjoy the scoot. When the RR 250 TLX turned out to be the real deal I told her I was going to sell the 50cc. She said no, keep it, I want to learn to ride. Now this is a 36 year marriage with many, many motorcycles and she has never asked to learn to ride. Maybe we will have a whole new thing to share in our old age. Always a good thing.

4 bucks a day? How big is your scooter? My scoot costs me $2 a day to drive to and from work. if I ride my bicycle it only costs me whatever it costs for lunch.

Same things happened to me. Had one day next to me at a red light ask me mileage and top speed. Some guys from work will tell me to get a "real" bike, but then they say that I've probably got more sense than any of them, speaking of gas costs. Most people around here don't understand that there is a fine thin line between motorcycle and scooter now. 99% of everyone who comes talk to me about it, they say something along the line "Well I understand, with gas prices being so high, I ought to get one." I don't mind negative or positive comments, I'm just amazed that it draws such attention.

In the 2000 clicks I put on mine so far...gas and speed come up first always.
The most strangers i've talked too were acctually at the gas station.
I also get alot of comments on looks with my scoot.
I am trying right now to join the dark side! (250cc)
I want my license plate to say 69MPG

Earlwb, mine is a 250 (UC250Z Bandit), but I ride 80 miles a day ( at freeway speeds) and I use 1.3 gal a day and I use the 91 octane fuel. I get lots of strange looks when I'm passing people(That! Just passed me?!-that's the expression).

I remember I almost bought a ZX10 the second year they were out( I had a Honda Nighthawk 650 '85 Model), I could afford the ZX payments but not the insurance, so I didn't get it, which made my girlfriend at the time happy, she knew me all to well..

Well I'm single (ninja may help that?) but need to pinch pennys and have fun.
I got the 150 and love every bit of it except my reliability factor (i'm having issues with the oil staying in the motor=)

The reason I got a Bandit 250 was because it is based on the Yamaha Majesty and Yamaha parts do fit. Were are you leaking oil from?

I get questions all the time. My 85 Elite 250 has the rockin Kenwood Hondaline Radio and I hooked my Sirius radio to it.
Went on a poker run last year for a deceased Harley Mechanic. About 50 HD's, a Goldwing and me. The Harley folks all came over to check out the scooter that not only kept up with them, but rolled with tunes from space.
The tables were turned.

I would like to find a "My scooter is in the shop" small sticker or license plate frame for my Harley. Plus I'd like a "My Harley is in the shop" equivalent for the Harley too.

I spent the last month riding my Scooter GV 250 in south eastern Utah. Around Canyon Lands, Arches, Capital Reef, Bryce and Zion national parks. This area is very popular with the motorcycle set. I was pleasently suprised, at how well I was treated by groups of cyclists in parking losts and on the road. There was quite a bit of interest in my scooter as there were two of us on it. Lots of questions as to wheather we were touring on this scooter. No we carry it on the back of out motorhome. I quess I expected to be shuned or ignored by the motorcyclists. Found they are a nice friendly group of people.

They were so amazed by the satellite radio that some of the chicks started complaining about not having tunes! Really funny thing is that this spring my cousin was talking about a co-worker of hers who told her last summer about the scooter with the radio on their poker run. What a surprise my cousin got when i took her to my garage and showed her the scoot.

I dunno, I would find a radio distracting and I'd most likely would get hit by some moron.
I need to keep my wits about me

I'm actually trying to look into my options for installing speakers onto my people 250 so I can hook up an mp3 player to it. I'm having trouble getting started, mostly cause I don't know what to look for and where. I do know I need all weather speakers, and I'd like to be able to hear music going about 50-55 mph at best with wind noise. Anyone know if rigging this is possible?

A nice bebefit of a radio is that since our scoots are so quiet I notice alot of drivers that drive with their windows down looking around for the source of the music.
And no, I don't play rap!
