I can buy a 2008 250cc wildfire in my area. It has 1200 miles on it, they claim it ran but now won't start. They are only asking $450 but what am I getting into?

If you're mechanically inclined, and if the body isn't beat up, it sounds like a swinging deal to me. Probably needs a PDI, carb cleaning, battery etc.
Pull the dipstick. Check oil level and smell the oil. If it smells burnt walk away.
You need a hot battery to turn over a 250cc.
If it isn't locked up, i'd be all over it. Good luck.

Pump the kick-start a couple times - if it moves, its not locked up. if you feel resistance from engine compression, as you normally would kick starting a scooter, then it probably can run again.
Can you fix it? Absolutely. If you are willing to learn and buy tools. Will it cost you more in parts/tools than buying one that already runs? hard to say. The tools will of course be good for future endeavors as well. Will you get it running before the riding season is over? Also hard to say. Assuming you are starting off at the beginning as far as skills and scooter knowledge, it will depend how fast you learn and how much free time you have. I was fortunate enough to already be an automotive mechanic when the 50cc fell into my lap last year, the rest is history! If that scooter you're looking at was in my area, I'd have already bought it.

250's don't have a kick starter. You could try a jump start.

I wouldn't drop $1 on the bike unless I knew what was wrong with it. Is it simply a dead battery, clogged carb or something more serious. I'd tell the guy to get it running at least or cut the price in 1/2. When my motor died on my 2008, I could've put it togather cleaned it up, and tried to be dishonest about the extent of the problems, but I didnt keeping a clear conscience, and sold it for $250.

I'm leaning on the roketa MC 54b instead both are used but I don't like the looks on the wildfire at all
