I can't believe it, my wife is more generous to me than I am to myself. She said go ahead and get a new Japan scooter, here is money for the down payment!
My dilemma is this -- do I get a new 2012 Burgman 400 ABS or a new 2009 500cc Yamaha TMAX?
I can get either one and the prices are different of course, but equally attractive -- and they are both from the same dealer.My research indicates the Burgman is a Buick type set of wheels and the TMAX is a Camero type set of wheels in character.
Any thoughts out there?

Test ride both and see which you like better. Maybe also see what reviews you can find. I'm sure either one will be a fine ride. I'd be partial to the Burgman for ABS, fuel economy, and cargo capacity.

My old scooter is a SunL 250cc YY250-2 and currently sitting in my basement in Wadsworth, Ohio with unfortunate noises emanating from the right side of the crank case when it is started. It was a struggle, but I did get a little over 12,000 miles out of it. I am beginning to miss too much riding weather fixing it.
My project for it is to take the right engine cover off, remove the stator and flywheel, and check the starter free wheeling clutch. If that's the trouble, I'll fix it and sell it next spring. If it isn't the problem I'm not going to go deeper.

And either one has plenty of power, even when carrying a passenger. Yes, the TMax might win in a drag race, but I think that most people who are attracted to these bikes are generally not much into drag racing.

Depends on what you want. The TMAX is faster and more agile (and has a sport bike frame) The Burgman has more features and better mileage.

You have pointed out the deciding factor, the handling advantage. I nearly had a head-on crash when a modest bump upset my SunL as I went into a curve. The resulting bobbing made me drift all the way to the right side of the road. I cleared the car by two inches, and the mailbox beyond the car by even less.

T-max i hope you can handle a very very hard seat if your looking for comfort better go with the burgman or even the Yamaha Majesty the t-max's have very hard seats trust me my son has a 2009 t-max 500 i think he bought knowing i wouldn't ride it cause it has a hard seat lol

if i had it to do all over again id get a burgamn 400 plenty power.comfort,good bike strong good gas milage cool style not a bad price and you can even find some used ones that are in good shape if i buy another bike it'll be a burgman 400

If I have to I'll mount a tractor seat on it like I did my 250 Sunl.

Just take the seat to an upholstery shop for for that Laz-E-Boy level of padding and comfort.

I went with the TMAX. There are joys and sorrows. Joys: Power, Speed, and Brakes to match Solid, it's-on-rails handling The roads are a lot smoother now. I feel the larger bumps but the sharp jarring is gone
Sorrows: Back rest needs moved back Wind shield is too short for anyone over four feet tall The seat will eventually need re-padded for comfort. Will know better after the wind shield and back rest is fixed and I can try different seat positions.
Thanks to all for the feedback.
Over all, I love it and I can fix the seat and wind shield problems my self. Been there, done that two or three times already.

Saw pictures of your new ride at motorcycles.com. Neat how the seat is hinged in the back so you don't have to walk around the machine to get access. (but the seat does look rather thin.) Btw, isn't YY250-2 the designation for a Jonway?

Been too busy riding it. ;D Maybe in a few days when I get the wind shield situation fixed. That thing is worse than nothing for a tall six foot plus rider. I got a hold of some Lexan and today I worked up the nerve to drill mounting holes in the wind shield. If I wreck it that's OK, it is worthless to me any way, and if I can't modify it to my satisfaction I will buy the five inch taller touring wind shield. I'll try it out tomorrow. Lexan is interesting stuff. Easy to cut, drill, and sand, and if you have a metal brake you can bend it cold, like sheet metal.

If the back rest/ butt rest is like most other scoots you can take it off completely with a couple screws. I did that with my 650 Burg and it gave me about 3 inches to slide back.

Corbin makes seats for the T Max. They will work with you on the design. They ain't cheap, but they are comfy after you get them broke in. I had one on my V Star 1300 and loved it. When I sold the bike, I put the factory seat back on and I sold the Corbin locally. I sold it for what I paid for it.
I think there are windshields out there if you look around.
I test rode a T Max last year. They are great scooters. A little complex, but great none the less. Enjoy.

Congratulations on the purchase. I have it in the back of my head to look at a 2009 Tmax as a second bike someday for sportier rides. It would be hard to part with my current one because I am getting 70+ for mileage, and it is fun to ride, but I ride with a couple guy with big CC motorcycles, so if I am going to ride the twisties with the big dogs it would be fun to keep up a little easier.
I'd hate to lose my current bike but I like the idea of having a pair in case a friend with a MC license comes over and we could just go for a ride. They are so cheap to insure, maintain and fuel. Kinda digging the whole scooter thing.
And as they say, Nulldevice, pics of the new scoot or it didn't happen!!!

You guys realize Yamaha dropped the T-Max from its lineup. I went to the International Bike show in NY city to specifically look at Siverwing, Burgman and T-Maxx. There were no T-maxxes and The rep told me they dropped them. So parts might become a bit of an issue, they were only here for a few years. No explanation why other than the Japanese side of corporate. Chris

It is not that big of a deal to some. I like the 2009 better than the new 530cc version. They tinkered with the looks in a bad way IMHO, and I am seeing a lightly used one semi regularly on CL. Maybe in a couple years. Can not justify it just yet.

Warren, when the rep told me the T-Maxx was axed, I questioned why they would do such a thing. The bike had great ratings. I had looked at a Mourphous once at a dealership and loved the look of the thing and seriously considered buying it but in the time I took to decide, I'd found out they were dropping it. The rep said the japanese made the final decision and they don't allow the american reps much leeway in method or sales strategy at the top. The guy said once they decide its over...its over.
Jwalz, I realize its not a concern to some but I'm experiencing problems with CF-MOTO right now as far as parts availability goes. They took down the parts pictures and access page so now you have to go to a dealer. There website isn't listing their current dealers so you have to call the main office or go through any paperwork you have to find a contact. Al in all a genuine pain in the #ss. Just more hassle to keep the thing upright. Yamaha is pretty good about parts. The T-maxx was quite the scoot.

Honda has a habit of doing the same thing. In 1985 they brought out the Helix. They stopped after the 1986 model. Later they brought it back because it took a little while for people to get used to it. Then in 1989 they brought out the Pacific Coast. Dropped after 1990 and brought back later. It is just that they don't sell initially like they expected.

Good for your wife. Mine is about the same. I was fooling around fixing and trying ot get a 150cc China scooter runnig good enoujgh to get by and looking and looking and looking. She finnaly stepped im much as your wife did. Partly because I have always had such great experience with Yamaha Ouboards I started lookng at Yamaha and stumbled on a low low milage 06 400cc Majesty for $2300. I know have added about 1000 miles in the last 16 months. I have only done a carefully PDI and changed all fluids when I bought it. It sat for a bit over 3 months while we were in Italy this spring/summer. I turned the ign on and listened to the pump build up fuel pressure, touched the starter and off she went. She will do 80 and keep up with interstate without any strain. so far, 100% relieable.
My guess after a carburtated 250 china scoot, almost any EFI with a japan lable will be a joy. You might look at a 250 EFI Honda. I also suspect some of the late model Chinese or Korean or Formosan efi scoots will also keep you happy. I think you would also like a local dealer even if he costs a bit more. I see you are good at the fixing, (so am I) but I sure am enjoying no fixing. Good luck.
