I ride all year and wear insulated underwear and heavy pants with thermal socks when it gets cold. On the top half I have a Tourmaster mesh jacket with 2 liners. When it gets really cold I switch to a Gortex jacket with a Thinsulate liner. I also carry Frog Toggs in my saddle bags for something extra if I need it. You are right about the cold being different here. I have tent camped in as low as 27 degrees F. and felt fine. Here the wet cold goes all the way to my old bones. I used to duck hunt in Lake O. in a wetsuit. Chest deep with the air temp. under 40. Boy, I was young and dumb but I would harvest my limit more times than not along with a few cotton mouths.

Layers. I live in the Tampa area and on those cold days and night I wear a few things. A long sleeve shirt, a sweat shirt (or jacket), my bright yellow riding jacket. Sometimes I will even put long underwear on. Rain pants are helpful as well.
Read the blog and linked it to my own.
