Another close call on the way in this morning. Trying to yell under a faceshield doesn't work after you have tried your horn. Haven't had to use the horn in awhile. Every time I start up I check my lights, brake light and turn signals, but not the horn. I pulled into a parking lot to figure out what the problem was as I was only getting a weak meep, meep out of the horn. No bugs or dirt in it and connections tight. I checked some of the previous posts on installing aftermarket horns (auto horns, air horns) on scoots. Has anybody tried anything else and just not posted yet? I am leaning toward one of the small air horns some of y'all have installed. Ideas?

You can buy higher decibel electric horns but will probably have to use a relay and a power wire directly to the battery to get the best performance. The small air horn will give a great noise. Some wire them on a switch so they can select either stock or air horn. I have twic elec. horns on my scoot. I switched one out for a different tone horn so now I have a slightly louder noise that is two-tone in quality - sounds more substantial now. May add the small air horn & switch - kind of like "City" & "Country" horns like some cars had.

ordered this off amazon. 130dB very nice. very loud www.fiammamerica.com/Product.asp?ProductID=156If you use one horn, no relay is required. Easy replacement, just unplug old horn, and plug in new horn. Took me about 15 mins to screw on new mounting bracket (which came with it) and move old wires to new horn.

Hey all!! Thanks for your input. Now all I have to do is make a decision on which one. Most likely will go with the air horn. Just too many close calls lately with cages that don't know we are there.

If you are having close calls a horn is not the answer. You have to ride as if you are invisible because you are. You may think you have the right of way but you could be dead right.

Whoa pardner! We are invisible, that's the issue. Cagers just don't expect us to be there and do some crazy things, like trying to do lane sharing with you when you are in center lane of a five lane street. You have to ride knowing it is going to happen. I am not new to scooting. Two years and over 10,000 commuter miles. My horn is dying and all I wanted was some input as to replacements not a dressing down.

I didn't mean to offend you. I was just trying to pass on some of my 54 years of experience. I never have a reason to toot my horn. I also don't have close calls.

No offense taken. 54 years of *experience*? I'll see your 54 and raise you 6.

I always wanted to put on a air horn that sounds like a 18 wheeler. That usually always gets someone's attention. But I haven't seen one small enough for a motorcycle of scooter yet.

For the second time in a week I've almost been tagged on my scooter. A woman pulled out of a gas station causing me to lock up my back brake. She stopped within inches of my front tire and was embarrassed while mouthing I'm sorry. Just yesterday a woman pushed me over to take my lane; I followed her into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot and asked if she was aware that she had illegally taken my right of way and that she could have killed me. At least I got an apology but you bet I'll be looking for cadillac horns at the local junkyard.

I had to replace a failed horn, actually FAULTY horn on my scoot. To make sure that the FAULTY horn didn't shut the whole scooter's lights off, I wired directly into the battery a relay and separate fuse. Cool Problem solved, but... meep meep--hmmm. Since no one bought the Stebel Magnum 80 (110 decibels), I mounted it on the bottom by the battery along with the meep meeper in the front. Let me tell you, when it sounds, it's (they're) loud. It kinda sounds like a few cows are mooing loudly and one them decided to be a smart arse and bring a party horn into the mix. hehe.
Needless to say, blowing the horn on a scooter really means nothing since something has, is or will happen and what are you going to do about it? It's kinda like the ole saying, "If I ever come into a situation that I have to dodge a ninja sword, then something went terribly wrong in that day."

I replaced the stock horn with a cheapie car horn; it's louder, and I wanted something better while I loked for a good replacement.
Honking can be very helpful; if some car isn't paying sufficient attention, a quick beep can get their attention before they do something bad to you.

You are expecting that by honking the other guy is going to look out for you. I do not depend on the other guy to do the right thing. I stay in control of the situation at all times. I look out for number one no matter what the other guy does.

The horns off an Genuine Buddy are supose to sound like it came off a Mack truck. That'll get the attention of a cager.

The Buddy horn is a Stebel Nautilus. Whoever made that choice is a genius. ;D

No, I'm not. I try to be ready if they do something stupid. A horn is a tool in that preparedness; maybe catching their attention will make them realize I'm there, and not do the stupid thing they might have otherwise. A horn is to let other people know you are there, nothing more.

You said it all in your comment, "A horn is to let other people know you are there, nothing more." That is what I have been trying to get at. Case closed.

... I stay in control of the situation at all times. ... There's an attitude that'll get you killed in short order. If you think you are in control of anything on the road other than yourself, you are sadly mistaken.

I haven't had an accident in over 50 years of riding. I contol my situation by keeping a safe zone around me. I always know what I'm doing and most of the time I know what the other guy is going to do also. If I don't know what he is going to do I lay back and watch. Patience is a virtue especially when riding.

No Relay, just un pluged and then pluged in the BIG horn.. lol ... You may want to reconsider that choice. Those horns draw 18A IIRC, and you probably don't want to burn up your horn button.
