Hi, I'm new to the board. Glad I found it, great resource!
Just a note on scooter insurance. I have a lance Duke 150 that will be in tomorrow (we'll see!). I was running into the same issue on Progressive's website that has been mentioned before, not being able to find the Make and therefore couldn't get a quote on collision and comp. Called an agent, he called his customer service people and apparently there's no way around this with Progressive. He then mentioned that he also used Dairyland. Eureka!!,I had my motorcycle insured with them and also my Hitong 50 and they were great! I had been told that they went out of business. Not so!. I got full coverage with 250 deduct. for $210 a year. Dairyland is now part of Sentry Ins.

I went to my insurance company to get my coverage and they don't do scooters. So they sent me through American Marvel. $500 deductible was $244 a year. This was without medical coverage on myself. Would had been another $110 if I added that. Needless to say I am looking around at other options.

I've got pl/pd from Liberty Mutual for $95.00/yr (calculated using 2500 miles/yr usage). I didn't think the cost of insuring for the other stuff worth it compared to the value of the scooter and cost of chinese scooter parts.

Do any of these policies include theft?

I have Geico, and they were the cheapest for me, I did check around and still do all the time, but no one beats their prices.
Yes dlabrie, if you get the comprehensive and collision package like I have it includes theft.
Another good thing to have is a AAA MC policy. The standard AAA policy does not cover scoots...

I just got Met-Life for my scoot. They've covered my vehicles/life/etc. for a long time...one year full coverage for me was $91, with a $100 deductible and covers theft. Only thing I wonder about now after reading this thread is about the medical coverage; am I covered if someone else hits me? (In other words it ain my fault) $5,000 medical coverage probably aint enough if I get messed up! What do you think?

What do you think? -Kerry If the person whose fault it is has insurance (and that's a big if), their insurance would be responsible up to their limit of liability. Uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage would pick up the tab if the other person had no/insufficient liability coverage, and if you have UM coverage (generally much more expensive than liability for yourrself). $5000 medical coverage will get you about 15 minutes in a trauma center. My daughter spent about 6 hours in an ER (non-trauma) a few months ago and the bill (that insurance paid) was over $7000.

Its really not as expensive as you might think. Get one with a high deductible that allows you to create an HSA account. Blue Cross has one. When I was self employed it cost me $150/mo (I was over 45yrs old. Teens/young adults are about $50/mo) If the other party is at fault they will pay the deductible and OOP.....And you don't have to wait for an accident to use it!

ok.. so I've had the duke 250 now for about a week and mirror of course has remained the only real issue of concern. I had to order a new set from a local shop. Without the mirrors I can't get the inspection and without the inspection i can't get my registration and tags. Insurance was a bit of a hassle because they couldn't find scooter on their agenda anywhere. When they finally figured out how to bypass the situation I got good coverage through progressive for about 111 a year. So that's good. The ride is good. Compared to the Q link 150 I had before this it's a dream. I've had it up to 72 on the highway and it just wails on the local roads. Very smooth , very handleable , good acceleration and staying power for rides over 10 miles or so. If only I had mirrors , and tags I wouldn't have to feel like a criminal every time I go out to buy bread or milk. I love the ride . One little thing . I have longer legs so i'm kinda cramped. I think I'm going to have to put some highway pegs onto it somehow. Even though the seat is huge and comfortable somehow it's pinching a little. I think it's just because I have a fat ass and probably need to continue losing weight and maybe get a nice soft cover for it. The trunk lock is spectacular compared to the Q link . Great room and the rack on the back is even better. Yesterday I had two of my daughters at a time on the back and they had a great ride. I took my wife, who is about 135 pounds on a little jaunt around the neighborhood , up hill and back down and she thought it was a nice comfortable ride. For the price and the manufacturer country , I think I made out pretty well. The tax office had to call Wendy at motor toy shop in Oregon and Wendy said she would have Lance overnight the new and improved title to me so I could get the tags. The supervisor at the EL Paso Texas city tax office told me she could not accept the title because it was missing one number from the vin. now she wants a picture of the bike, an inspection , the new title sent etc. before she will let me pay 234 dollars and get my tags.
So I'm driving around without tags or mirrors , but it's kind of fun. Just hope I don't get caught and put in jail for illegal scooter fun.

The reason some folks are having problems getting their scooter insured is because you need to tell them that it is a motorcycle. For some reason, when they hear scooter it triggers some kind of cosmic funk in their brains and they reject you or the person in charge of "NO" gets on the phone and your sunk. Just insure it as a motorcycle and that works. It worked for me twice. I did mine with progressive. 81 bucks a year.

A "Scooter" is a "Recreational vehicle" like a go-ped, or an electric-cart, like you see old people drive at the stores. The DMV/Inc. does not see a "Cosmetic design style", of a "Motor-Scooter, as being anything more than a motorcycle. (Motorized device with two wheels, which has the ability to drive over 25-35 MPH, and has been approved for street use. As opposed to an off-road motorcycle, or race-motorcycle.)
In all essence... this it the reality of motorcycles...
Bike (Non-powered, or assisted power. Must not go faster than 20 MPH, or it is a moped. Street legal.) Scooter (Stand-up device, which may be powered. Not legal for streets or sidewalks.) Moped (May or may not be human powered. Must not go faster than 35 MPH. Street legal.) Motorcycle (Powered, with the ability to reach 35 MPH or more. Street legal.) TYPES: (Design style) - Moped (Sitting, legs forward, short body, step-over) - Scooter (Sitting, legs forward, short body, step-through) - Dirt/Off-Road (Multi-position, multi-body, not street legal) - Motorcycle (Forward lean, legs back, short body) - Touring (Sitting, Two-up, backrest, extended body) - Chopper (Sitting, legs forward, extended body) - Race-bike (Forward lean, legs back, not street legal, short body) - Drag-bike (Forward lean, legs back, not street legal, long body) - Jet-bike (Forward lean or forward laying, legs back, not street legal, long body)
That is the most "Common", classifications, as seen by the DMV, in most states. There are in-betweens... Obviously, you can have a street-legal off-road bike, in some states. Not all scooters are step-through, not all mopeds are step-over, and there is a stand-up jet-bike/scooter.
In any event, those are seen as a motorcycle, with two permanent wheels, in-line with one another. (As opposed to a MP3, Trike, Sidecar, Quad, or Segway.)
Personally... I think they should redo the whole system. Just use a checklist of things to cover...
- Number of wheels - Engine size - Drive wheel RPM and MPH - Bumpers - Windows - Roll-cage - Wind-shield - Seats with restraints - Impact collision resistance (F, B, R1/4, L1/4, R, L, R3/4, L3/4) - Impact collision force (F, B, R1/4, L1/4, R3/4, L3/4) - Weight - Weight capacity - Tow capacity - Commercial use - Max passengers - MAX MPH (20 MPH or more only) - MAX BHP - Max MPG, MPW (Above 20 MPH, Below 55 MPH) - 45 MPH AVG MPG, MPW (or MAX if lower) - 0-45 MPH MPG, MPW (or 0-MAX if lower) - Min MPG, MPW - Pollutant volume per mile - Pollutant volume per hour - Percent of structure toxins (Lead, plastic, Lithium, Nickle) - Active/passive alarm - Active/passive electronic recovery - Number of unique stamped/machined ID tags - Color 1, 2, 3 - Reflection surface area, (F, B, L, R) - Fatality rate, (Driver, Passenger 1, p2, p3, p4, p5, p6)
That would not say you are a motor-cycle or a car or a bus... It would simply reflect the potential for danger, safety, legal requirements, legal restrictions.
If there is a restriction on speed, or on BHP, or on weight... You are bound to the restriction. If vehicles over 600 lbs, with 2-tires, with a max-speed of 200 MPH are illegal for road-use... or have 95% fatality rate for drivers and passengers... Guess what, you deserve high insurance rates... Your gonna kill yourself or someone else, potentially more than the other guy, driving a vehicle under 500 lbs, with 4-tires, with a max-speed of 80 MPH, and has only a 5% fatality rate for drivers, and only 1% fatality rate for passengers.
I hate that they simply lump everything into one area. The separation is unfair, unjust, and should be illegal, as it stands.
Seriously... a 1200cc $20,000 bike that can go 200 MPH, and has enough weight behind it to do more damage than a car would... costs only twice as much as a 150cc $2,000 scooter, that can only get up to 65 MPH. I would understand if they could both do the same damage to another oncoming vehicle... Last time I checked... the bars were filled with those 1200cc bikes, and only 1 or 2 scooters. (The largest portion of accidents on motorcycles involved intoxicated riders... driving on wet road conditions... alone... crashing on turns... and ending in fatality or severe injury. There are substantially less collisions with other vehicles, which have fatalities.)
Fatalities are important... because dead people don't continue to pay inc. They are also more expensive than a bumper or a broken leg.
Step-through and light-weight is important, because the number one injury on a non-step-through motor-cycle, is a broken ankle/foot/leg/hip, when the heavy bike pins the person underneath it. I have seen hundreds of videos... scooter drivers usually walk away from most accidents. Even the vehicles that were hit by a scooter, are mostly without major damage. Untrue for the vehicles I have seen hit by motorcycles, and motorcycles that I have seen crash on-top of the drivers. (They usually always got carried away... to the hospital... just for falling! Thus, the fatality rate for falling drunk on wet turns, with a heavy bike.)
Any-who... Yes, we are all driving ultra-light motorcycles. Just tell the DMV and Inc. that you have a motorcycle, shaped like a scooter. (They may actually have separate coverage that is cheaper for "Scooters", but not all places call them that.)

I had similar issues getting my scoot insured. My agent kept saying "I don't think we insure scooters, are they allowed on the street?" I had to tell her that I have a VIN and that seemed to do the trick. So she hooked me up with motorcycle insurance through SafeCo. I use them for my truck and apartment insurance. I haven't had any issues and they have really good prices, only pay $120/yr for the scoot but that's cuz I had an accident last year on my record.

I just added mine to my home owners insurance. That covers theft and liability for others injuries if I hurt them. If I am hurt, in Fla we have Personal Injury Protection, so my auto insurance would pay my medical even if I were walking and got hit by a car.....

I went with Progressive. $76 dollars a year, liability only. Both myself and the lady on the phone agreed it was pretty stupid to carry full coverage on a $1300 bike.
