So today was my very first scooter ride. I've hopped on the back of my stepdads motorcycle a couple of times but I've never controlled anything like this. It was nerve racking. I was so scared I was going to crash...I almost did a few times. I have bad reactions and I freak out and throttle when I need to brake. Ditches and parked cars became nightmares today. But even though I was stressed out it was still fun. Turning is sooo scary. I already knew from my stepdad you have to lean into the turns and that is just scary. But I started warming up to it. It was just such a new experience. But it was fun!! I can't wait till I get better and not so scared. But I would rate my first scooter ride a 10!!!

Sounds like you had a good time... Glad to hear you made it safe! Sounds like you could get the hang of it pretty quick! Hope you have more fun ones!

Keep on enjoying the learning. Be safe, read all you can on scooting and consider taking the MSF course.
Confession: On my first ride on my scoot in February, I was putting the scoot into the garage and there's a small concrete "lip" going in--I gave it a little too much gas to get over the edge and the forward motion kinda threw me back a little which caused me to pull the throttle toward "go" instead of push it toward "whoa" and I clipped the lawnmower before I could hit the brakes. It was almost a bad commercial for Progressive Insurance (or any motorcycle carrier) but luckily scoot, lawnmower and me escaped unscathed. DH (dear hubby, not doufous hubby) kinda smiled (he was trying VERY hard not to laugh) and showed me the way to put it in properly.
Lesson 1--remember which turn of the throttle is "go" and which is "whoa".

I would definitely recommend taking the saftey class. It's not that expensive and it could save your life, not to mention make your riding a lot more enjoyable. Good Luck and Happy Scooten!

I purchased a scooter about 2 weeks ago now. I've been riding/practicing here in my neighborhood. The first day or so I was extremely nervous, never been on anything with 2 wheels before. But everyday gets a little better, still not to great on leaning into my turns. Signing up for the safety class soon. I'm pretty new to all this scooter business but I've been doing lots of reading on these posts. You guys offer lots of good info, I'm sure I'll be doing tons of reading.

Thank god!!!! I'm not the only one!!! I got on mine for the first time and the first thought in my head was, "What the hell did I buy this thing for" I was so nervous. I'm scared that the fact that I get nervous is gonna make me wreck all on it's own. Turning is weird. If you turn the handle bars, I feel like I'm gonna fall off. If I lean I'm gonna fall off. I just have to make sure that everywhere I drive it is straight and flat!!! Otherwise, I'm just gonna take the car and forget about the scooter!!!

I got my 250 yesterday and finally got my first ride in today... and my second, and third, and fourth. IT was a bit scary at first. I've had 50cc's and motorcyles up to 350 before, but this is way different. It's longer than anything I've ever had and it feels like 1/2 the scooter is behind you. It's a strange feeling to adapt to.
However, I am loving it, big time!. Unfortunately I don't have it all legal yet, so I'm sticking to the neighborhood, which is all private streets, and a fair amount of gravel in places. That makes me nervous and I can't wait to hit the highway for a smooth, straight, WOT ride.
I think the trick is to ride enough to get comforatable, but don't get too comfortable and become complacent. I'll probably do the MSF course when I can, but it's not available until August in my area, and I can't wait that long to air this thing out.

which caused me to pull the throttle toward "go" instead of push it toward "whoa" .... Lesson 1--remember which turn of the throttle is "go" and which is "whoa". Well see that, is understandable...whats sad about my bad reflexes is that I have a throttle and then I have a brake lever. So you just pulled the wrong way which is totally understandable...I'm pulling on the exact opposite part of the scooter hahaha!! My brain can't handle the pressure of knowing one thing means go and one thing means stop hehehe!!

I got on mine for the first time and the first thought in my head was, "What the hell did I buy this thing for" I was so nervous. Yeah when we were riding, being so nervous was stressing me out and then I was thinking "Oh my god what if I don't like this?? and we wasted all that time and money?!" and my fiancee bought it so I was really freaking out. But once I was done and chilled out I realized I'll get better and I won't have to worry about not liking it.

It's a strange feeling to adapt to. Yeah I realized the other day how different of a ride it is on a scooter compared to a motorcycle. Because a motorcycle is like one continuous thing and you straddle it, and you feel more....gravitated to it. More latched on to it. A scooter...its just so different. You sit in it like you do a chair. And you feel so much less latched on haha! But I'm sure once I get used to it, it'll be fine

OK, so the paperwork came and she is all plated and on the road. I got to take it out for real for the first time tonight. At first I was nervous, but then before I knew it I was going 45-50 and comfortable with it. Getting the hang of leaning into curves and building confidance. So far, so good. Put almost 20 miles on it tonight. ;D

The motorcycle safety course here is $250! And they don't have any openings until at least August. I'd really like to take it, but dang! That's expensive in my book!

If I take the safety course and pass I get a discount on my insurance which is another incentive for me. You know living and living with all your facilities and pieces and parts is not a bad idea either.

Which hand to you hit your fiance with, to make him go faster?
(Slap... Mow the yard... Slap... Pick-up your socks... Slap... Take out the trash...)
Your right hand, right...
Slap your scooter to make it go faster... with your right hand on the throttle... You'll never forget that!
That same hand, is also the front break. (That is the most critical, and also the most dangerous break... You don't want to break your slapping hand... be firm but gentle with it!)
If you don't abuse your fiance... this will be hard to remember... So, start abusing him, in the name of scooter safety! LOL..

My husband is trying to buy a **GASP**COUGH*** enduro. Please don't spread that around, I have my reputation you know. But I have taken the MSF and I have told him he isn't allowed to ride it if he hasn't taken it. If he buys one he'll have to trailer it home. I think the MSF have life saving tips that you practice so your ready when the times comes. Instead of "I think there is an emergency maneuver here".......CRASH!!! I wanna take the next up class they offer here where I live.

Here, in Richmond, VA., It's $165. After successful completion, you can legally ride! you have 30 days to get to DMV to get the Class M designation to your license. You don't have to take the written or skills exam! And they're almost booked a month in advance.

In Pennsylvania the MSF is free... all you need is your permit. To get that you take a computerized writen test. Get 16 out of 20 questions write and $10... you get your permit. I'll be taking the MSF starting next weekend.

Earliest I can take the MSF class here is the first weekend of October. Have decided to wait on a scooter purchase until I have taken and passed the course. The more time I spend on-line looking at scooters, and reading the great posts, the more anxious I get. Have not been on a motorcycle since I was 15.

Guess what??? I just got a 2008 Pink Lance Venice, today! I just love it! Unfortunately, we are in UT... have to take it back in the van to MT on Monday, & get the 60 day sticker before I can drive it. It only has 1 mile on it!!!
Take care!
