I hail from Atlanta, GA and I'm undergoing research on 250cc-type scooters.
Why am I doing this?
I'm tired of my family's budget going more and more towards the cost of gasoline going up; I'm familiar enough with financials to know that the cost per barrel is likely to remain above $120 and certainly above $100/barrel for some time to come.
What do I know so far?
I know that I have a commute to work (roughly 45 miles one way) on all roads 55 mph or less. This means that I want to get into a scooter that won't be "red-lining" at 60 mph. It's also true that this potential investment will not be a car replacement, but a car reduction (I don't think anyone would recommend riding in inclement weather!).
My current baseline scooter is the Roketa MC-54-250B and my budget is around $2,000. This is based on a recommendation from my father-in-law who has frequently traveled (business) to China and is very familiar with the pros and cons of Chinese "Honda and Yamaha knock-offs" and who is also considering this model.
I also know that I have an open mind to learn anything, given enough time and resources. For me, this would have to be a self-maintained hobby, not too different from a Unix/Linux weenie being able to completely build a computer and operating system from the ground up (I know, only those computer geeks will "grok" what I'm talking about!).
My biggest issues at this point are (1) finding out if a scooter is "ride-able" for me and (2) if parts can be had from anywhere with reasonable customer service (I'm taking care of #1 when my father-in-law brings a 150cc scooter to the house on their next trip here for me to test drive).
Recommendations please! Am I going down the wrong path by considering a Roketa/TANK? Is there something comparable that I should be considering instead? I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty as long as I have directions/manual/info from the Internet.
scootdawg is an excellent site, BTW -- lots of great info available here.
All the best,
-Phil
