My manual calls for 95RON/85MON. I've heard you should average those for US values, which means I should be running 90. I've been putting 93 (premium) in, but someone told me that could overheat the engine because it burns up so fast? Doesn't make much sense.
Anyway, my question is, should I be running Premium or Mid-Grade? I assume I shouldn't dip as low as the 87 regular stuff.

Hey there Jefe, my manual says use 90 or above octane. For my first three tank fulls I used the 93 octane. Then I read this article about how people using hi test were moving to medium octane and medium guys were starting to use regular and the high stuff was just sitting in the gas station tanks. Anyway, this last fill up I switched to the 89 mid grade. Seemed fine on the trip home but I'll keep you posted. As to your other post, I added 3 ounces of Sea Foam to this tank.
Also, I've seen some posts that say the Asian rating meaning 90 is equivalent to our 87 octane so I'm still a bit confused on all this stuff too.
One more thing, I talked to a guy who owned a gas station once and he pointed out that you don't see gas filler trucks pulling up with regular or premium loads. He said that what they added to the premium was in the 1 part in 1 million ratio so he never used anything but regular.
Honestly, if the 89 seems fine, I might try regular 87 octane on my next tank fill up.

That's because the truck tank is chambered, he doesn't have clue of what he's talking about. Do you notice when you see a truck at a gas station filling the tanks they have 3 or 4 hoses going to different fill points? Those are the different grades being pumped. 87 octane is fine as long as don't hear any little 'farts' ;D coming from your muffler when you decelerate... -Rich

Say Rich, no, I haven't seen a gas station getting filled in ages, thanks for the clarification as the rumor I heard was many moons ago. I read a post where someone stated they got better mileage on premium. I'm trying a tank of middle grade and see what happens.

I went from 69mpg to 74mpg just by changing from premium to regular, no rime or reason. Last week I decided to test it and tanked up with premium again... ran the tank out and got 70mpg, so I'm sticking to regular from now on, I got a consistent 74-76mpg running it before.

In my Saab 9-5, which is tuned to efficiently use Premium, I get better mpg's than with regular. But I know if you use premium in vehicles that aren't meant for it, it doesn't improve, and can cause buildup in the cylinders. A friend of mine put premium in his Prius to test it out. He got worse MPGs than he normally does. The question is whether a 2-stroke 50cc engine is as sensitive to the difference as a 6-cylinder. And does it burn up the fuel too quickly, which is probably what was happening for Rich. Did you notice any change in power, Rich?
