I went on a little scooter rally this past sunday from Fort Lee New Jersey to Bear Mt State park. Good weather, nice scenery and scooter carnage!! Four guys dumped their scoots along the way. No one was hurt and the bikes were all still driveable, but there was considerable damage. Most notably the guy with the brand new Piaggio MP3 who tangled wheels with a Vespa and dumped it just as we started climbing this steep upgrade. It went over and slid back down to the bottom of the hill. Damn! Those things are heavy. Took three guys to stand it back up. Ah... good times.

If I was the owner of the MP3, I wouldn't have been very happy! Sounds like some unsafe group riding practices.

Holy crap, are you serious? I ride with a group every Sunday and we have only had one incident of 2 scoots rubbing wheels, and even that was at about 2mph... Don't you guys stagger? -Rich

I am completely serious. All the incidents happened behind me, so I can't be sure of who was at fault. I can tell you that almost all of the scoots in this group were pricey toys for rich boys. Vespas MP3's etc... All great folks to hang with but definitely weekend warriors out for a once-a-week ride on some fairly challenging twisting roads.

Palisades, 9W, Alpine, and Piermont, huge elevation changes, killer twisties, and a view of the Hudson awesome! Wish I was there.
Glad no one was hurt except for a bruised ego and pocket book.

Major bummer, Sounds like some people need to learn how to ride in groups. I am glad no one got hurt.

We just had this conversation this morning at our Sunday group ride... It seems a lot of folks are dumping these MP3s! It seems to always be on a hill with a curve. There must be something to this... I know when I rode a trike, it was a whole different animal making turns and such.

"Big Guy" or Rich,
My thoughts exactly, from promotional videos that I've seen on the MP3, you hardly ever see them heading up or down a hilly winding road. Could be a design flaw.
earlwb,
Some of those roads in that area may even require single file riding. Practicing to ride in groups is an art, not easily mastered, but achievable.

Well runs,
No offense, but I certainly hope I don't meet any of them at this year's Amerivespa in Chattanooga, or at least not on the tail end of the Dragon scheduled for Thursday! ;D
311 mountain turns in 11 miles!

Yeah, 311 hairpin turns!
I have done it before on a motorcycle, but this is a first on a scoot! Best part is, the group heading over is estimated to be over 100 scooters!
I'm bringing my helmet cam!

I would never roll that mp3, it just looks like a crash waiting to happen. There was a reason 3 wheelers were discontinued back in the 80's...

There was a point in this ride where a few of us and one of the MP3 guys fell way behind the pack. We waited at the top of a hill for one of the slow guys who seemed to be having mechanical issues and couldn't get much power out of his scoot to climb the hill. Anyway, we took this opportunity to open 'em up and catch the pack. I was rigt on the heels of the MP3 and it was quite a beautiful machine to watch as we leaned hard through the twisty bits. This one was ridden by a young, obviously skillful rider and we had a blast. It seemed quite happy on the flat winding roads, but it did seem awkward when attempting to change directions on a steep upgrade.
