I have a 50cc scooter that rarely does over 30mph. My concern is that I do not have a leather jacket, just an ordinary jacket (the outer part is cotton, and the inner part is a mix of polyester and cotton. Will this jacket offer any protection at all if I wipe out at 30mph?
I do have a pair of decent gloves and of course a good helmet.

Not much, sorry. Kinda like jeans, they go away really fast when they come in contact with moving pavement. (yeah I know the pavement isn't moving, same difference <g>).
Actually have to use care with leather, most of what you find is fashion leather, very thin. Will stop the wind, offers no protection though from the pavement. If the coat's not heavy weight wise, it's not designed for riding.

Tie a rope to a friend's car and have him/her drag you down the road at 30 MPH in your jacket.
I didn't think you'd do that.
Same effect as taking a tumble off your scoot at 30 MPH.

Regular jackets do help a little, but not a lot. Your best bet is to get a motorcycle or scooter jacket with the heavier thickness leather or fabrics and the padding and armor built in. Those pads really work. I know i tested them out live before myself, but it wasn't a test at the time.

Btw, I've got a number of leather riding jackets, really should put a couple on Ebay, almost never wear them. I've got a top of the line Joe Rocket jacket that I wear all the time until it gets hot, then wear a Joe Rocket mesh jacket that's actually cooler than wearing a T shirt alone.

What JR mesh jacket is that? I am thinking of getting a mesh for summer, Cali summer is HOT, and the leather jacket isn't helping with the heat any AND the stopped traffic we are famous for Aero

It's their Phoenix jacket, the new ones are better have the option of a liner so you can wear it when it cools off and stay comfy. I got mine when they first came out and that wasn't available.

Btw, mine's black, you'd think it would be terribly hot in the sun, but it's not. When they first came out there were few colors, better now Bill H.

Jeans offer "some" protection up to about 25mph (personal experience)... you will be scraped up, but will recover with minimal scars. A normal jacket at 25mph like you describe will keep you from wearing away bone, but thats about it. Most leather jackets are for show (like stated above) and will shred on even a tipover from a stop. $100 will buy you a good motorcycle jacket that will protect you up to about 60mph, $100 will also buy you a good helmet, $20 for gloves, and $40 for over the ankle work boots. This is much less that most peoples insurance deductable. Save yourself the pain of a crash and have the right gear.

lagman: You need a decent scooter jacket or motorcycle jacket (not the fashion jackets). A good scooter jacket shouldn't run you more than $150 or so, and is worth it for the protection. Mesh: my wife and I both have Tour Master Air Intake Jackets. A little more expensive, but work it for all the features including one insulating and one water proof liners. We use them more than our leathers because we do mostly summer riding here in NE Ohio. Shop around and ride safe, Tom

thinkin of gettin this jacket. anyone see a reason safety wise not to get it? it looks good for summer and cold fall/spring mornings and seems a fair amount of protection and its not ugly. www.motodirect.com/servlet/Detail?no=285
