Smooth, straight road. Suburban setting. Main road with 40 MPH limit, two lanes each way with center turn (5 total).
I am heading North, approaching a cross street (30 MPH posted). Guy in a pickup waiting for traffic to clear at the cross street that entered from my left. His intention was to cross the larger street, not to make a turn either way.
I could see his head swivel both ways a number of times. As traffic cleared (except for me), he accelerated quickly to cross, BUT he had not seen me. Had I not been alert and punched it a little, I would have been a hood ornament. I barely got by, felt the breeze from his bumper. I think that at that time he finally saw me. He quickly sped away with a squeal when he realized what he had almost done.
Had I not stopped on the side of the road to shake for a while, I might have chased him to see what brand of idiot he was. Probably best that the shakes took a while. No telling what I might have said, turning a bad situation worse.

The important part is, he didn't get you. Sadly, the longer you ride the more stories you'll have like this one.
