I have hit 80 on my Helix and was still pulling. Had to back out of it because of traffic. I'm 6'5" 315. Full tuck with a crosswind. I was seeing what difference my tranny work made. I do a lot of day rides and have to keep up with big touring bikes. I put a new clutch, bell, belt. and 26gram Dr pulley sliders. Previous top speed was 74mph. Now I can cruise at about 74 and it seems like the rpms are lower. Bike rides smooth and has never had an issue. Now I have a Goldwing but my wife rides the scooter when we go out and she can keep up with the group too. She has hit 79mph.

Scooters used to all be designed to top out at about 55. The gearing was worked out that way for large and small engines, because the limiting factor was the small wheels. They just are not safe over 55 or 60. The new ones with large wheels are more like motorcycles. Most scooters I have driven also have short wheelbases which mean that a skid can happen fast and require keen reflexes to control. My old scooter (left) has a long wheelbase and excellent suspension, and will go as fast as the motor will take it, which is 57mph, even on back roads. The Elite does not handle nearly as well, which is a lot more normal scoot. But I usually drive my scooter 45 or 50 on two lane roads because it feels better. There is a great deal more reaction time at 50 than 55. Things come up, and a scooter at 55 is hard to turn quickly. I have gone into a sideways slide at 50mph years ago to avoid a car pulling out and don't know how I managed to keep from dumping it. If I had been going a little faster I would have wrecked.

Yes, I held it up to 65 mph along ways.

I've gone up to about 70mph, but have no desire to see if I can go faster and actually prefer 60mph because the scooter seems to comfortably cruise at that speed and I don't see a reason to push the engine and compromise stability when I don't need to. I was hoping my scooter would cruise easy at 55 and get to 60 if needed and that's nothing, so I'm happy and not looking to try and max out.
Maybe by 70 it was pretty much maxed out, I can't imagine it moving much quicker.

I commute 100 miles aday. I start on 4 miles of gravel then county road for 10 and rest is a four lane. I go 35 to 50 on the gravel. On the four lane i cruise at 65- 70. I have passed vehicles easily at 80. The looks on their faces is great (Im being passed by a WHAT!!). I would like to do a few mods like clutch, exhaust, variator, and intake redesign. I don't want to go faster I just want it to be able to respond quicker at faster speeds. I can cruise at 75-80 but that is WOT. Best part is I save $55 a week in gas.

Passing traffic IS very entertaining on a scooter. Just because it's, well, a scooter. LOL.
