I am a physical therapist and I spent the first 15 years of my career working in a trauma hospital. I can tell you a million and one stories of motorcycle injuries that we took care. Road rash...mild to severe loss of tissue from slight skin abrasions to total loss skin and muscle, loss of limbs, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and death. We whirlpooled, cleaned wounds, debrided dead tissue, and re-dressed wounds. You want to talk about pain....even with morphine on board .
A large percentage of these injuries were caused by people doing stupid things on their bikes, or driving drunk. The amazing part was that some of these people didn't learn a thing from their stupid actions. You know they will be right back out there doing it again.
Wear a helmet...Period. Flesh and bone wounds will heal and you can move on (for the most part). I have seen people struggle greatly from even a slight head injury. They just are never the same. Can't remember things, can't figure out how to balance the checkbook or even write a check, make change with money, cook food, find their way around. Most end up loosing their jobs because even though they look normal and act normal, the brain just can't seem to figure out how to do the things it once did. My cousin was in a bad car accident while a sophomore in high school. No broken bones, but a bad head injury. He used to be then nicest guy and we were really close to each other )same age). After the accident, his personality changed and he became a mean person you didn't want to be around. Of course, at high speed, even a helmet won't necessarily save your life. That's why I like my scooter vs. a motorcycle, it keeps the speed down and doesn't allow me to necessarily drive like a maniac.
I am off my soapbox now
OH yeah...watch out for the other guy....
