Here are a couple of links that I think every scooter and motorcycle rider should take a look at. The first happened sliding across the road at very high speeds, but still shows what terrible damage road rash can inflict. The second happened at a fairly low speed, 35mph or less, but shows what can happen when a person suits up for a ride all exept for one critical item of gear, in this case boots. The pictures with these articles aren't for the squeamish, but show how serious this can be. tinyurl.com/fdkrktinyurl.com/yv4vqf

Just becasue your scootin doesn't mean you should wear any less gear than if you were riding the harley or crotch rocket.
As a fireman myself, I have seen my share of accidents on bikes. It is all the others on the roads that you have to concern yourself with.
Dress appropriatly, drive defensivley, and enjoy your ride.

Unfortunately people seem to not care much. I still see numerous people rising without helmets even. At least someone could have on a helmet. But from personal experience, wearing a jacket, pants and boots is great. I have a jacket that got scoured once, when I dropped my motocycle in my driveway of all things. I wasn't wearing pants and it busted my kneecap open real good. it took a year for the kneecap and knee to heal up OK. I have numerous scars attesting to the fact that human body is not compatible with pavement.

I was finally able to read the second story. major bummer there too. But the big windshield on the scooter, brought back memories. Way back in the dim recesses of my past, I was using a large windshield on a Yamaha 350 bike, and a wicked cross wind caught me one day and caused a shimmy on me too. needless to say, I couldn't recover and it turned into a tank slapper, and I high sided the bike. I was only wearing a helmet, t shirt and blue jeans and shoes of some kind. I had various patches of skin lost here and there too, along with the palms of my hands and knuckles etc. yes I was a teenager too, all young and feeling immortal and invincible.
I have yet to feel comfortable using big windshields ever since.

Well I am new to the boards, but have read thousands of posts as I enter the world of scooting. Not having rode anything with two wheels other than a schwinn 10 speed 35 years ago, I intend to be somewhat cautious. Thats why I found this thread the best advice I could have gotten. Thanks! I actually bought a helmet and gloves before I even ordered my scoot! I also read this article prior to finding this thread and even though not a scooter but a great read and eye opener. Even my Harley and crotch rocket friends read this and changed their clothing habits. www.speedfreakinc.com/content/articles/riding/roadrashqueen.html

What?! How could Art drive a cage to a scooter event Glad to hear your wife didn't crash, that's got to be a shocker having your windshield blow off. Aero
