I've got 5100 km on the Viva now and its running like a champ. The charging system is working, there are no more coolant leaks and the idle is perfect. But .... I have one strange electrical problem .... with my turn signal clicker.
Here is some background: I installed a clicker purchased from Oregon vintage soon after I got the scoot. It worked great; clicked loud and clear whenever the turn signals were on. But at the time, my charging system wasn't working. After several months of fiddling, I finally got the charging system going by replacing the resistor heat sink diode (the battery had to be replaced too.) Now however, the clicker exhibited a strange behavior: It would click normally with the key in the 'on' position and the engine not running, but whenever the engine ran the clicker went silent! And if the engine died while the turn signals were on, the clicker would click again normally. Also, by the way, everything else electrical (horn, lights, flasher, gas gage, etc) worked normally engine running or not. And now, even if I disconnect the resistor diode, the clicker still doesn't click when the motor is running. Strange, huh?
This is a dumb little problem, but I've tried just about everything I can think of to fix it, and so far nothing has worked. Here is what I've tried:
First, I double checked that the clicker was wired in right and that all the connections were good. Everything seemed up to snuff.
Second, I ran a separate ground wire directly to the battery (Green wire to green wire). No change.
Third, I replaced the clicker with a new one I ordered from Stan. Again, no change.
Fourth, I installed a different resistor diode - no change.
Finally, thinking that maybe the voltage coming out of the voltage regulator was somehow not "clean" enough, I replaced the voltage regulator. Again, no change.
I'm at my wit's end now. I'd really like to have the clicker work (Keeps me from looking like an old man driving down the street with my turn signals on). Some one did suggest substituting LEDs for the turn signal indicators, but there must be a way to get the clicker to work. Any thoughts from the Dawg pound??
Thanks!
Gary
