Everything finally arrived and installed nicely. The fit of the bracket mount kit was extremely good and other than having to drill two 3/4" holes in the grab bar cover there were no unpleasant surprises. Drilling the holes was not hard accept I did not have a 3/4" bit. I had to do a little careful grinding but it went well and as I said before the fit was fantastic. Another nice feature of the trunk is that it is easily removable with a push of a button and you are left with a small but functional and sturdy rack. The removing feature also would make it easy to use the trunk for a small suitcase on a long trip that could be removed and taken into the hotel. My wife has not tried it yet so the jury is still out on the backrest. It seems High to me but I will let here make up her own mind (like I'm going to change it anyway). Looking forward to a long ride this weekend for her to try it out. I also purchased two matching 1/2 helmets. I not sure how much protection these really provide but they are DOT approved and with the local heat wave it may make being legal a little easier.

Those half helmets may be DOT approved and protect the MOST important structures of the brain, they do not protect the entire brain. That means in a nasty crash you could easily find yourself on a rehab unit at your local hospital learning how to walk and feed yourself all over again. I recommend at least a 3/4 helmet, especially if you're cruising at highway speeds.

Thanks for your input. I do where full protection on the highway. These short helmets are for around the house, town and back roads.

Monty57,
Good job on the trunk, that finishes it out as far as looks go. you will love the space under the seat plus having the trunk as well. As for staying in motels, I always make them give me ground floor room, I look for the one with lowest curb. Check in , find the room, open the door and roll the beast in. Most motels don't mind so long as you don't burn out on the carpet.

Well it came. I saw and I installed. Not quite that simple. It could not be mounted in conjunction with the trunk mount with out some careful bending and a 1/2" spacer between the two brackets. After installing it this way there was only one catch. My wife hated it!. It pushed her too far forward. Back to the drawing board. I began to examine the lift bar that the rear of the trunk bracket was bolted to and found it to be a pretty substantial cast piece that was bolted to the frame in 4 places. Hmmmm. I felt that since the trunk would no longer be taking all of the weight of someone leaning on it, maybe I could support it just off the back two bolts. I carefully cut the bracket and re-installed the steel base plate using the only the two rear bolts. I then slid the plastic trunk mounting plate back about two inches and installed it with only two mounting screws. With it back that far I could then install the factory backrest as it was meant to be. She said that felt great. My only problem at this point was the trunk did not feel very stable. I could rock it front to rear quite easily. Upon closer examination I saw it was not the steel mounting plate that was moving but the plastic top plate the trunk mounts on. I remove the trunk and drilled two more holes in the steel plate to accommodate two more screws, plates and nuts. That did the trick the thing feels as solid as it did and no rattles. The only drawback to this installation is the trunk will not fully open. It still opens wide enough to get stuff in it but it does not go all the way where it stays open on its own because the backrest pad on the trunk hits the new backrest. Not really a big issue. I can still get helmets, briefcase and everything else I have tried into the trunk. I will post some pics as soon as I have a little time.

The joys of mods, something has to be a miss once in a while. Now you just have to pass the final test. Good luck.
