My owners manual says to use 10W-30 in the gearbox and I can't seem to find any gear oil with this rating. I like Mobile One fully synthetic oils but can't find 10W-30 gear oil. I intend to use 20-W50 full synthetic motorcycle oil in the engine. I need to use products that are readily availble such as at Auto Zone or Advance Auto. My Fashion has 900 miles on it so I am getting ready to change the fluids in it. Also what is the coolant of choice and what mixture to use? Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

The Honda Helix manual says to use 10w40, so I don't think it'd be a problem to use that. I intend to put 75w90 gear oil which corresponds in weight to about 15w45 engine oil... because gear oil has additives and modifiers adde3d specifically for gears, rather than internal combustion engines. If I can find 75w85 synthetic I'll use it instead as it's a little lighter. I know it's available(somewhere) but haven't seen any on shelves.

2shus; For gear oil, regular gear oil of 75W90 or 80W90, your choice of Dino, blend or synthetic. One container of gear oil will last for a looong time since this oil is not subject to the same contaminants and deterioration so it does not have to be changed very often.
CFMoto recommends diesel grade - here I go again! - oils of 15W40 viscosity. They are blended for diesel fueled engines AND HARD WORKING GAS ENGINES. If you do change to synthetic for the engine, the diesel grade in a synthetic is 5W40. You can find it on the shelf at any Walmart with the other diesel oils. No need to use expensive motor cycle oils formulated for cycles that often have wet clutches.

There was a great discussion on the subject of gear oil when I posted the "How to change" article. At the time I had doubts about motor oil in the gear case but I have since found that it is very common. Even the Yamaha Majesty manual recommends 10w30 motor oil for the gearcase oil. I very strongly agree with scooterollie on the use of 15W40 diesel motor oil and that is the oil refereed to on the my CF Moto engine tag. It is designed for hard work, high temperatures and long life. I am going to change the oil again in my Roadrunner this weekend and intend on putting the 15W40 in the gearcase as well. As far as coolant I like to use a50/50 premix designed for aluminum engines as made by Prestone. That way you don't have guess about the mixing ratio or buying distilled water.

Well I got the fluids all changed and this is what I ended up doing. I went to walmart and got the Shell Rotella 5w-40 full synthetic for the engine crancase oil. Then I got the Mobile One 10w-30 full synthetic for the gearbox. I changed them both without a hitch and man were they ever black!!! YUK!! That is the blackest motor oil and gear oil I have ever seen. I may change them again in about 500 miles after seeing how black it was. After seeing that I will be quick to change my coolant soon also. Thanks to all who helped on this forum, it made my decision on which oil to use easier and all the pics and links made the job easier. Thanks, Tim.

2shuh; Good choice for engine oil but I would stay with true gear oil - 80W90 in synthetic, brand of your choice. As DennisD said, gear oil is specifically formulated for use with gears. The sticker on my CFMoto gear housing specifically recommends true gear oil, not engine oil. I don't think you are really doing any harm, just think the gear oil is better.
