I just noticed a slight rattling which seems like it originates from the transmission. I've checked for loose body panels, checked all of the fittings, checked transmission fluid level, everthing is fine. Could it be the weights that are rattling, and if so, is this normal for almost 3,000 miles of scooting, or should I head straight to the dealer?
The rattling is noticeable during the first start of the day, goes away when the engine warms up, then returns when I get moving. Thanks for any help!

Lol and here I was thinking that you actually had a REAL snake in your tranny. ;D I'd like to see a pic of that.

My Bali 250 developed a similar sound this Spring - especially when the scoot was cold. It disappeared after warm up. During routine maintenance, I removed the CVT cover for inspection. While things were open, I used the compressor to blow out belt dust from the clutch, etc. Noise gone!

Well, the noise still remains. Popped off the cover, and minimal dust present. Belt looks new! Start up, same noise. Gotta take the People to the dealer...major bummer. Hopefully it's something simple, like a loose nut or something...

Ah, it seems that I'm not immune to Murphy's Law...
Changed the oil with some Royal Purple Synthetic. The scoot has 4600km on it, so I figure it's time for the synth oil. The annoying rattlesnake is still in the trans, so I called the dealer. Had to borrow my brother's pickup to get it there, cause the dealer said "Don't drive it here, but get it here". Start it up at the dealership, and the dealer made a "Kill It" signal. No scoot for the 4th of July, in fact...no scoot for a whole week. Dealer just received a new shipment of Sym/Carter buggies and scoots, and he is well booked for service. I already feel the first symptoms of Ride Deprivation Syndrome setting in...

John; Not suggesting your problem is identical to mine but there was very little dust in mine at 2K Kms. Using the compressed air, some dust - not an excessive amount - came out of the clutch. Still has not made the noise again in the last 200 Kms.

How in the world would dust get all the way inside the clutch? I thought it was virtually airtight in those areas...

Ashley; Not so! The dust is "rubber dust" from wear of the CVT belt. The clutch has openings in it's housing and the rubber dust can easily enter the clutch. Could also be some dust generated from wear of the clutch linings in normal operation - just like brake dust, from disc brake pads, that coats your wheels.

don't be so sure it's in the trans. sounds like it could be valve noise. maybe from the gas. try and upgrade one level on the gas and get the valves adjusted.

Twister:
I already use 93 octane, and the People is at the dealer. Should know what's wrong sometime next Wed. or Thur. By then I'll be on the second stage of Ride Deprivation Syndrome...

Well I've had a small rattle in my trans on my people 250, but it's hardly noticeable. I only hear it when accelerating from a dead stop. I have 12,000km on mine. Haven't had a valve adjustment or CVT belt tension check done on it yet. I'm thinking that the belt is loose.

Today is a Great Day! Just finished taking Kym on a 40 mile ride. The motor is noticeable quieter than before. She's back! YESSSSSSSSSS! Some background: The rattling was not the trans, but was in fact a bad crankshaft journal. Worn so bad that the repair tech said it had an incredible amount of freeplay...so they just replaced it, and KymcoUSA picked up the tab. It was the first time anything like that happened, so I made history...but in a Murphy's Law kind of way Well, a month later and I finally get to ride. It is stifling hot out here (94 deg F) and Kym would slowly heat up when stopped in traffic, so I parked her after only 40 miles. I will try another ride later on when the outside temp drops into the 70's. I've already had two butt pluggs try to kill me in traffic already, they just yap on the iPhone and pull right into oncoming traffic... Other than that, she seems fine. I've got to do the beak-in thing again, but that is small consequence to have Kym back between my legs ;D More photos with my happy mug to follow! Ride Safe John

Good to hear, I'm glad everything is alright now. That it took a whole month isn't cool at all though, doesn't say much for Kymco service. They could have at least put that top trunk on there for you for your trouble.
That kind of damage one would expect to be covered under warranty, can't imagine something like that could happen by negligence or rough handling.
Best of luck, hope you don't get any further trouble. I'm keeping my eyes peeled on Kymco and any new developments. My new employer is soon to start up as a Honda Motorcycle dealer and if all goes well he may look at some other lines, I think scoots could do well down here and my vote is for Kymco ..... out of purely selfish reasons of course ;D.

Andi:
Yeah, a whole month!!! The repair tech walked me through the repair...for one, they've never had to open a Kymco engine before. This was a first time occurence, and I'm the unlucky dude that had it happen to him. In addition for the parts, they had to burp the cooling system, which was difficult because the radiator sits so high and the engine is very low. Plus, they have a HUGE customer base that needed repairs, and I wasn't the first in line...and tearing a motor apart for the first time required an entire day for them to complete, then the actual repair itself. All said, I'm just happy I have 'er back! Life is Good! Have fun with the new job!
