Ok, ready for another fun roadrunner racer 250 story? I go to put the storage compartment back in after adjusting the idle, and I am using hand tools to screw in the bolts that hold it down, get the first three in tight, and the fourth, well, I get a "snap" and then it's loose... Now, I am not exactly a bodybuilder, ok.... The bolt broke off in the nut.... Should I even bother trying to get this fixed by the company? Is there even a way to fix this that does not involve replacing a major part of the frame?

You should contact the company to see if there is anything they can do to help. You never know, it can't hurt to try. Rony evosales.com

To fix it yourself, get a Sears "screw-out" kit. Costs about $10. You put the bit in a drill, run it in reverse. The bit bites into the bolt and backs it out. At least thats how it works most of the time. There other types of screw extractors as well.

If the bolt was welded to the chassis, nothing you can do except maybe drill the rest of it out and install another. May not be a problem, though. The other three will undoubtedly keep the compartment in place. The metal used for these welded-in-place bolts is often inferior - soft, with the studs breaking off or threads stripping.

Please don't assume 3 bolts will do the work of 4. First speak with Moises at our office. Send us some pictures of the problem if possible. We will forward them to the factory and advise what to do. Please be patient and don't try to fix this on your own, let us help you. If you take some people's advice that you are on your own, you may screw up your bike for good and end up with a total loss. I can't promise anything but there are good chances the factory will warranty a problem like that. Rony, evosles.com

Rony; No disrespect but, if we are talking about the storage compartment bucket under the seat, 3 bolts will do. No real safety problem there.
Westcydr; At any rate, if he is your dealer, take his advice to protect your warranty!

I have had to drill out all four bolts on a Longbo I was working on for a customer. They are quite soft so I was able to re-tap the welded portion and install a hardened bolt from the underside.
I am with Rony on this one. Even though it may not seem like much, the way these scooter frames are, you need all the support and stiffening you can get.

I can't assume that all storage compartments are the same, but mine takes two bolts well inside the compartment that go into a frame piece that supports it, and two bolts that are welded into the frame at the top of the storage compartment which fit through holes in the storage compartment. Two nuts go on those once the "basket is in place. The bolts down inside are really hard to get to, and I've decided that I will probably not put them back the next time I have to remove my storage basket, because once it's in place it can't possibly move, especially once the seat's down. I doubt it could even rattle... but that's how mine fits, and I'm sure they're not all the same. And even so , I still plan to put the easy to get to nuts, on the top two bolts. But since it seems like the idle speed needs to be adjusted a bit every time the overall temps go up or down by 20-25 degrees, it'll make it easier to get in adjust idle and put things back. Interestingly enough, I have a trap door panel in the bottom of my basket that, when opened, gives me no useful access to anything!
Mike, if I really thought that the frame was so flimsy that it is dependent on the plastic storage basket for enough stiffness to be safe.... Man, what a scary thought! If you can convince me of that, I'll sell it, buy a Japanese scooter and never look back! I've ridden it while tuning and doing mods without the basket in it, sometimes hard. Nothing squirrely, vague, or threatening feeling was going on. I'm sure I'd have noticed it then, because those are times I definitely pushed it harder than normal, just to evaluate the results.

Dennis D; You are correct. Nothing to be concerned about! My Fiji was the same. At the most, those bolts/studs are there only to keep the bucket from vibrating, nothing structurally important.
