Joe, You describe the process perfectly - those body panels are like one giant chineese jigsaw puzzle. But once you get it figured out, they go on and off pretty easily.
I'm going to attempt replacing the stator tomorrow. A new diode will go in too. I'll take photos along the way and post them.
I too will be one happy camper if I can just get the darn charging system fixed..

One big Chinese Puzzle! Well said, I spent all day replacing my carb, mostly trying to figure out how the heck they put all those panels together. Fortunately, I was able to remember when putting them back on. Then I thought to myself, why did I bother putting them back on?

Hi everyone -
I did get the replacement stator and started the replacement process. the CFMoto 244 CC/172 MM engine's right crankcase cover does have a oil seal gasket on it. I tore mine in the remove process and did not have a replacement prior to starting the stator replacement process. I have some pics over on the replacing the stator thread if you want to see the process. The Honda Helix Service manual that Stan Jessup mentioned was a great reference guide for the removal process.
Once I get the replacement gasket I will complete the process. I will update this post to let you know if it resolved the battery charging problem or not.

Thanks a lot for the help. After trying to charge every night and hope that keeps me on the road, I found that the battery just dies quicker and quicker each time. Now it's only good for about 40 miles (or 4 starts) before it is completely spent. All the battery testing I have done tells me the battery is still good, so I am looking at the diode as the culprit. As of this afternoon, I have removed all of the body panels on the right side and found a couple of silicon boxes: one with about ten wires in it, mounted directly above the battery on the right side (inside the panel) the other is built into a heat sink with metal fins on it. The whole thing is about 4 inches by 3 inches and about 1.5 inches wide. It has six wires molded into it, 3 yellow and a red, black and green. It is fastened to the frame by two 2 inch bolts. Is this the infamous diode? I have time now to actually begin working on the scooter, so I hope to get it ready to winter well.

Okay, so I have stripped my scooter down to the engine and the frame and found NO DIODE. If my scooter is the same as the Viva 250 (body style seems to indicate this,) where would my diode be? Does anyone else have a diode problem without the diode? Is my scooter just missing this important little piece, hence the reason for its not charging? I will take a bunch of pictures tonight and post them in a new thread and pray that you guys are willing to help me figure this out.

Fangerman, It is possible that the diode rattled off, or maybe was left off at assembly. It is held on by a single bolt to the frame. If the one bolt came loose, the diode might have remained connected to the wiring, but on my scoot the connector was loose enough that it would not have held the diode in place had the bolt come loose. In fact, the connector fell off the diode once, just due to gravity and bouncing. I've since secured it in place with a wire tie. My scoot won't charge without the diode connected.
Yuo mentioned that you have some wires that don't seem to go anywhere. I have a bit of that in the dash area - wires that were probably for a radio that I don't have. But there are no loose connectors or unconnected wires in the back end of the scoot where the diode, voltage regulator, etc are located. All the wires in that area are connected.
So ... if you have a two-wire connector somewhere near the back part of the scoot that doesn't have anything attached to it, perhaps that is the connector for the diode. Note that the two terminals for the diode are perpendicular to one another, forming a sort of 'tee' (see the photo I sent you. If there is a loose two wire connector with the contacts perpendicular to one another like that, bingo, you've probably found where the diode should be.

I too have been having this problem. On one of the other threads, I posted a picture. The diode on my scooter is mount to the outside frame on right side just above the volt regulator and just outside the battery box. looks like a little heat-sink that would fit in the palm of your hand. I will see if I can find my pic for you.
