Hey all! I just finished a mod to my tank radio/speakers, and I thought I would post what I did.
As we all know, the radio and speakers are CHEAP! and the speakers are just screwed into the panel with no way for sound to escape, so the best you can get is a muffled noise from under the dash. I removed the cheap speakers, and ordered a set of 4" 300w marine speakers on e-bay for about 30 bucks shipped. Then I used a 3/16" brill bit, and drilled speaker grills into the dash panel where the speakers were originally. I freehanded this without a template, and it doesn't look too bad. Besides most of the time this area is not seen because the handlebars sit above it. Then I installed the speakers, and soldered the wires from the harness, and plugged them in. Also I noticed there is a red led that is attached to the dash volume control that was just hanging in the back. I drilled a small hole just above the dash switch, and glued in the led.
Well let me tell ya it works and sounds pretty good for a scooter sound system. Of course the major drawback is you have to tune in a station before you drive off, but I usually only listem to the oldies station anyway, so that's not so bad. Also I moved the radio from horizontal to vertical all the way back in the storage compartment so I wouldn't loose too much of the little space that there is.
Anyway, that is how I spent my day today. I hope this helps anyone trying to improve the sound on their own tank! ;D

subsailortrainman; Your mods sound great! I stripped mine out but have been considering some type of MP3 system that won't take up much space.

Thanks for the pics and idea. I moved the radio in my Roketa 250 forward. It just fits between the two hatches, and I can still get a small helmet inside the rear of the compartment. (Or two six-packs, two 750mls, and snacks for tailgating) Got in what may be the last ride of the season last night. Not often is it 60+ in November. It is easier to keep warm on the scooter, with the nice wind break, than it was on my old cycles.

I have tried a cheap mp3 player that i got free with an SD card, and a $12 fm modulator. These go in my pocket, and I tune the crappy radio to the same freq as the modulator. At least then i can pick my own tunes. Works ok, but will have to try with new speakers.
