Mike, Burgman is the Suzuki model, they make a 400, 400-Type S, a 650(cc) and 650 Executive (abs, electric mirrors ,etc.). I was looking at the 650 when I purchased mine but they wanted $2000 more than I paid for mine ($5850). Thanks everybody! With the 50 miles a day commute I'm up to 470 miles today, at 600 it goes in for the first check-up. Guess I'll have to let the wife know it's not the Chinese scooter I bought back in Feb.

Thanks, it's just the name itself that I'm curious about. It sounds like an odd name for a scooter. For example, is Okiro "Burgman" the guy that designed it, is "Burgman",Japan the home of the Suzuki or is "Burgman" the Japanse word for cool...you get the idea...what the heck is a "Burgman"?

Sorry Mike, after reading your post again after my last post I realized what you meant. Posted the question on Burgmanusa.com, with over 7000 people posting I thought I might get the answer but they told me to try the search thingy. Tried it and got a list of 7615 topics listing Burgman, that was a lost cause.

Berg or Burg = City or Town Maybe a scoot to drive around town. Like a walkman. Manufacturers are known just to make up names that sound culturally appropriate. Like the Elite was the Spacey in Europe. The Kymco "Grand Vista" is known as the Kymco "Grand Ding" in other markets.

knice, your avatar makes me dizzy Grand Ding? I don't think that one would ever fly here. Then again, when I heard the name "Tank", I never thought that one would fly either.

Just got an answer off Burgmanusa.com and here it is.
Many years ago Osamu Suzuki, founder of Suzuki corp., had a puppy named Burgman. The puppy was named after their German butler Maxi Burgman, whom had died and was dearly missed by the family.
Ryosaka Suzuki, Osamu's grandson and President of American Suzuki Operations. Ryosaka was in the Japan Engineering Center when Project Z9864 was being completed visiting the Chief Engineer. Mousosu Kukkamaki. Mousosu was telling Ryosaka how this bike was going to be the top dog of all scooters.
Ryoska remembering the picture of his grandfather Osamu puppy named Burgman said we must name this top dog of all scooters Burgman.
Thus in full circle we have the Maxi Scooter named Burgman.
Dawg I thought you would like this explanation, This means you have to get a Burgman "so you can be the Top Dog". ;D ;D

Interesting story. Burgman's are a little large for me so we'll have to leave top dawg status to others.

You've got corn fields in ME? If they ever offered up a Burgman, I might just have to re-think my position on the size issue.

Howdy All! Newbie here. My pop has a 2005 Burgman 400 Type S (arrest me red color) in NJ. I live in Lanc. County, PA and drop by to visit and ride the Burg when I can. I think the Burg is called the Skywave overseas...why did 'Zuki change the name??? Anyhoooo, the first time I hopped on the Burg (I've probably put over 1200 miles on the thing alone...) I wasn't expecting too much. I've ridden my brother's CBR 600RR and was scared, well, excrement-less by the sheer accelerative forces. It is a 100+hp inline four, so I wasn't too enthused about a 385cc thumper. On the Burg, I grabbed a handful of throttle and the big bike launched like it was stuck by a cattle prod. And it kept on going...and going...and zoinks, it passes an indicated 70mph...huh? ? Indicated, I've had it up to 95mph on a looong stretch of Route 55 S towards Wildwood. It had maybe a little more left, but given the absurd nature of optimistic speedos, I'm assuming a GPS actual of maybe 85mph. Still very quick. Off the line, only BMW M3s and Vettes have been able to overcome the Burg's initial burst from a dead stop...ah, the beauty of twist n' go! My dad got it used from a brick and mortar dealer for $4700 with the Givi windscreen already attached to it. At 5'10", I feel absolutely no wind on my head...but I feel that the screen takes some of the top speed away, especially if Suzuki claims 100mph. My Dad is 60 years young, so he uses it for errands and pleasure (can you imagine the gas bills on a 2000 Dodge Dakota V6 just to get groceries???) and, well, because his friend Dave has a Burgman 650. That bike (I like to call it ScooterBusa) is in another league...too pricey, but VERY FAAASSSTTT! He does not have any luggage attached cuz the underseat storage will hold two full face helmets, a bathtowel, 2-24oz bottles of water, extra sweatshirt, extra gloves, a pair of running shoes and a map. Yep, managed to squeeze all that in there when my brother and I went on our first ride together. Yes, the Burg will take the CBR off the line unless bro can work the clutch/wheelie interface well enough with full throttle. The seat is comfortable for up to about 2 or so hours. Leaning a CBR-difficult. Leaning a Burg-second nature. Countersteering is a hoot because of the handlebars and the upright seating position. You don't have to press to hard on the bars before the thing drops right over. It is a little dicey over expansion joints and bumps, as the bike will go airborne over these things if you're over 50mph. I cannot take a "quick" stop for gas...everyone asks about it, and it was especially popular when gas was doing its $3.00+/gal waltz. As far as mileage, I'm getting between 45 and 56mpg, depending on how nice I am to the slow SUV's in the fast lane. Normally, I just like to show them how sluggish their 5000lb snails really can be. Twist n' go, baby!!! It is almost due for its next service break. We'll see how it goes. Now, where's that $5700 I had laying around for the new 2007 Burgman 400 (with a true 400cc displacement)... John

Welcome to the Pound johnnyscoots. I'm not as familiar with the Bergie and found your comments on the hitting of expansion joints at higher speeds. Would you say that the suspension is a little too tight?

Nice hog for the right person. I got on a 650 Burgman in Indy. Sorry my first thoughts were man this thing is a whale. I'm 6 ft. and 53 yrs old and personally I do not want to fight a 550 lb. bike again. A lot is to be said for a light and nimble Pegasus 150 - 80 mpg. scoot. You can not go 100mph., legally anyway, although it is a fun adrenalin rush. I've been 137 mph, on my old Yam 1100 back in 1980. There were a lot of telephone poles in those days. The poles would flash by you like crazy! It reminds me of that old song, Hot Rod Lincoln. One of the lines in the song is; Them telephone poles looked like a picket fence. Just my opinion.

I'm confused. Some folks (like ACD) say they can see the photos. Warstein says he gets an error message, as do I. What do I have to do to see attached images? For the record, the error message says:
This forum has currently exceeded it's maximum storage space for attachments. An administrator needs to either remove existing attachments to make room, or pay for additional storage space.
