while I was having new front wheel bearings put in, I had the guru at the cycle shop take the variator apart. we cleaned allot of belt dust out, polished the roller slide area and installed a set of 11 gram dr. pulley weights into the dr. pulley variator. I asked him if there was a way to get more top end out of it. He sat there awhile, $60 an hour, and told me to go to lunch and when I got back he would have about 10 mph added to it.
I don't know what he did but he test rode it and came back with a report of 70 mph. I said sure, that's right, I usually do 75 mph. He said go try it and see. I test rode the same path he took and I came back with, get this:
68 mph. he really wouldn't tell me what he did but he guaranteed it.
believe it or not, 68 mph.

Run it with a GPS, Chinometer readings don't mean diddly squat.

If the adjustement of the speedo makes you feel better about your scoot that is shows 68MPH, then I say keep it that way.
I thought I was going 65MPH, then my father clocked me on radar, due to he is a cop, and he told me I was going 50MPH....

I was talking to a guy at 909 extreme customs by my house and he was talking to me about something similar. He was talking about some muffler/intake/jet mods (typical stuff), but said that a smaller pulley on the wheel (final drive) would give a bit slower accelleration, but a higher top end. Being a physics guy, I knew it would work, just not sure they can find the part needed (help, anyone?), and if the scoot would have enough power to use the final drive to its fullest. Your mechanic might have done that to your scoot, but the speedo thing seems equally likely. Let me know if you know anything about the final drive thing.

Great theory, but in practice it won't work. Your belt is already going to the bottom of the rear pulley if you have the right belt, and there isn't room to go smaller. The only real answer on a GY6 is to change the final drive gearing for more top speed. Now that will also use more power, so you will need other mods to make it work. At this point, you are going into an area of financial foolishness and you should sell the 150 and move up. Thanks Stan, that's kind of what I though anyway. I think the best way to go (for me) is to just drill out the exhaust and gut the airbox (or install a K&N type) and upjet if I do anything at all (besides some custom cosmetic that I am in the process of doing, so far about $2.50 in cost). I think I'll save up and get a Ninja 250 eventually, any bigger will kill the MPG and be too scarry to ride anyway. THANKS!!!
