Hi all. I just got my first 50 cc Geely scooter for christmas this year and was not surprised to see it didnt run well in the Colorado cold. Im getting maybe 20 mph downhill and 15 uphill if Im alone. Its a great little scooter in Summer, Ive heard, but untill then I'm settling for tinkering with it in the garage.
So far Ive chopped the muffler off, replaced the airbox with a high-flow air filter, and compensated for those with a larger main fuel jet. Im thinking that in the next few months I'll get different centrifical weights to increase the top speed and then get a kevlar belt to help with acceleration. Besides that, the only thing I can think of (which Im not sure I want to do yet) is getting one of those units that increase the firing speed of the spark plug.
What else can I do to this scoot without simply ugrading it to 80 cc? Also, is there any way to increase preformance in the cold? (have already tried partially covering the intake
Thanks -Ryan

We are going to need to know what model you have. If it's one of the older 2 stroke chain drive Geelys, the most you will get out of it is around 30 mph. You mentioned being in Colorado. If you are at high elevation you may need to jet down, not up.

Well, its a 4 stroke 50cc engine. I live in a lowland part of colorado. I am aware of the downjetting v.s. altitude. The problem is that it runs great in the summer, poorly in the winter.

In colder weather you may need larger jets. The cold air is denser and requires more fuel.

Air is colder and more dense in the winter thus contibuting to a lean condition as you know... you may have to have a summer jet and a winter jet as fuel injection is not yet an option for a Geely. I don't believe a different CDI will help you any... for most not worth the money. You could get the 80cc kit but you'd be in the same boat trying to get it dialed in. Sounds like the best investment would be an assortment of different jets and play around with it. Is there a scooter or bike repair shop nearby familiar with tuning for your area?? What does the spark plug look like??? Put a new one in carry the wrench with you and go wide open for about a half mile then chop the throttle and shut it off coast to a stop and pull the plug. Black to rich(downjet carb), brown just right, white to lean(upjet carb). This plug reading technique is one of the best fuel delivery diagnosis's you can do.

You may be running slow because the engine isn't running right, or your engine may be running right, but your CVT isn't shifting up. If you just start replacing parts, with no understanding of what is happening, you could get lucky, but probably won't. ;D
