When I was at my scoot dealer to replace the warrantied speedo the mechanic (and I) melted two coils. When we were installing the wires to the back of the dash and testing after each connection we failed to notice that the two leads for the tach were touching together. When we tried starting the scoot to test the kill button I heard a pop and smoke started rolling out from underneath the scoot. We scratched our heads and installed another coil with the same results. THEN we noticed the wires.
Moral is: Make sure the 'chino' connector insulators are pulled over the ends of the wires to prevent shorts. The mechanic learned something and sure felt like an idiot.

When I had turn signal problems because the dealer had assembled the scoot and pinched turn signal wires, which in turn burned out the flasher.... the mechanic was testing circuits with a probe and couldn't it to light up when testing for voltage to the turn signal switch. I had already eliminated that as a problem at home with a VOM. After watching him trace back the wiring for the second time and finding no apparent problem there, I finally grabbed his VOM and showed him that there was 12.45 volts to the switch. Then he went back to it with the probe and kept muttering that it should light up the probe. I tried to explain to him that it takes less current to trip the flasher relay than to light up a probe, and finally got him to check and replace the flasher. I don't think he ever quite understood it. Anyway, the flasher was bad, plus one side of the turn signal switch wasn't working. New flasher, new switch and everything has worked fine ever since.

Yeah, I've done that too. Had to show the mechanic how to fix it while paying him.

Kinda makes you wonder why they are the mechanics right?
