Handeld GPS is one solution. The low end models will cost you less than a $100 and give very accurate speed. Bad news is they will eat up a lot of batteries.
Scooter computer (Lee has one for review) geberal use a magnet somewhere on one of the wheels and fixed pickup. These can be calebrated to be very acurate but tend to be exspensive. Bicycle speedometer use the same principle and you might be able to rig one of those.
Practical solution: Use a GPS to figure out how much your speedometer is off. Then ride accordingly.

monique; Looks like the speedometer/odometer is off on my Bali. Haven't had a chance to check it yet but think it is optimistic. Also, when I come to a stop, the speedometer is still going 20 kph. Takes a sec or two to settle slowly back to zero. Haven't addressed that either. Holds steady at speed and seems responsive to speed changes otherwise.

If the speedometer is mechanical, you have to know the gear ratio at the attachment, it can be changed to be more accurate. If its electronic, there should be some way to put a resistor in line to give better accuracy. Most speedos on all bikes seem to be off approx 5%. It is the rare bike that is accurate.

jacine; Thanks for the reply. Wonder if there are different gears available for Chinese scoots, and if anyone has gone that route?

My TT150 speedo is almost dead on, but my TT250 is off a ways. I suspect on the 250 it's caused by the use of a lower profile front tire, which I assume they used to compensate for the diameter difference when they use a 10" rear wheel. I'm going up one tire size on both to see if it sures the discrepancy. I also get the added benefit of using better tires (Pirelli) even though the Chinese tires have always worked well. Stan

Okay here is what you do.. First write down where it is.. off by 8 MPH before 20, off by 10 MPH after the 25 mph..
Knowing this.. take the dash off, disconnect and pull off the paper scale.. Now.. take a pic using a digital cam.. Take to your PC.. Alter the numbers..
Yes.. You dash may no longer read up to 100 MPH's.. but it is accurate and lessens the chance of a ticket..
I hope it helps.. takes about 3 hours to do the above.. getting the thing apart is tricky..

Dayum it's way off. Probably by about 20 mph, that's almost 25%.

He's a very big dawg, but a bit of a wimp. If I stop too fast he rear ends me, so no, he doesn't keep anyone on the porch. Besides, he's a lush. Two beers and he's gone. What a sorry mutt. Stan So is Barney a Big Dog, and does he make you stay on the porch?

I have a hand-held gps unit that I paid less than $100 for on ebay. It's rather antiquated as far as all the features you can get but highly accurate on speed measurement. I can move it from scoot to scoot attaching with velcro. I've found my Matrix 150 speedo is dead on accurate. The RX150i speedo is off by about 10%. Another option to check the speedo is to find one of those radar signs our friendly police put up and clock yourself. Or find a friendly cop willing to point a radar at you.

I got the same problem.
I just used my GPS to clock my scooter, and at 50 I was actually doing around 35, at 60 I was at 45, at 70 I was around 58. No wonder everyone was driving up my butt.
I would be doing 70 in a 55, and I still had people tailgating me. Now I know.....
So is there a way to actually calibrate these things, without having to redo the speedometer readout gauge?

Kabala,
From what you are saying it almost sounds like you have a speedo that is reading KmPH not MPH. If it is you would be fairly close to right.
