Another point on doing a lot of mods. A scooter (or any vehicle) that has a lot of performance mods, tends to be a lot more finicky and generally needs to be tinkered with more than a stock vehicle. If you are the type of person that just wants reliable everyday transportation, you are better off buying a larger displacement bike that will supply you with your desired speed range. Also, a heavily modded engine with have decreased life expectancy due to higher running temps and rpm's. It's fun but there is cost to be paid.

You posted this message on another thread too. Before you generalize, most of these kits are fine. Your cam may have been defective but I don't want everybody changing their timing based on one experience. Again, where did you get this kit?

I agree with your earlier thread Dawg. Everything is a tradeoff. When I bought my 150 last year, there really weren't alot of 250's around at the time unless I went to Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki etc. and spent 5 grand. Today there seems to be alot of 250's around and many of them are water cooled and low cost as compared to the big 3. In the end, you get what you pay for. If 55-60MPH isn't fast enough, then either you need to invest more money in performance parts while putting other stresses on your engine (and your brain), or just bite the bullet and spend more money on a bigger bike. As much performance as I have now, I could see the whole thing blowing up in the future if I beat up on it too hard.
I can't believe how long of a thread I started! What an endless debate!

Limey,
If you think that is a debate, try talking about alternative fuels! ;-)

Ooopsy, none of the 150's are going to get you 70 mph. Maybe downhill with a tailwind... maybe. Are you paying attention in class? Dang it Knice...would you quit twitching around? You're making me nervous dude! ;D

keep a turbo off there and it will last..... turbo scooter, sheesh, just buy a zx14 or hayabusa already.
even IF the bottom end WOULD last, the engine performance would very quickly show shortcomings in the tires, brakes, suspension and general handling, etc.
notice the ebay video clip was taken on a static dyno and a straight line street shot. just dip that vespa into a turn at speeds it wasn't even close to being designed for or capaple of handling....you'll be looking skyward very quickly.
IMHO, way too much motor for the total package!!!

At some point you have to decide what you want out of your wheels. My stock 150 was fast enough for about the first month, then after getting passed several times by some rich snobs in their SUVs going 60 in a 45 zone, who decided that their time was more valuable than mine, I decided that was enough and then I made my improvements. Now, I enjoy, more than drinking beer, blowing these idiots away, especially when they think they are going to pass "the little scooter".
Just what the world needs, more SUVs on the road!

Hi Limeracer. Thanks for putting all this information up!
Somewhere along the way I thouht I read a request for any ideas about future mods you could do. I don't recall reading that you installed a windshield but have read several accounts from other people claiming a 4 to 5 mph increase along with slightly quicker acceleration.
Have you tried this already?

No I've been shopping for an LCD TV and have given the scooter a temporary rest in the garage while the searing heat of the summer is in effect. Stacking alot of cheese installing generators for the wealthy and waiting for the fall to come so the temps are only in the low 90's and not the mid 90's. My garage is so hot it is inhuman to even be out there with the bottle of windex. I only ride when I can deal with the heat. Take alot of short trips to the grocery store for beer that's about it. I do realize I need a windshield and I will eventually get one but have you seen the price of LCD TV's?

Will the LCD TV fit below the instrument cluster?

For the bedroom Lark. Don't need to watch the manshow on the scooter!

120 mph, with a GY6 engine? Not unless they are somehow coaxing at least 40 HP out of that poor GY6, which is about what would be required to push a scooter to 120 mph. Either that, or there is no air resistance in the part of NJ where they live (possible, I guess; this is NJ we are taking about).

somecallmetim; Don't bet your paycheck on that! Did you see the film "World's Fastest Indian"? That old guy got his 1920s Indian motorcycle over 200 MPH! Took a lifetime of tweaking. I believe in stock form that cycle wasn't capable of much over 60 or, at least, no where close to 200!

I haven't seen the movie yet but would like to. I am familiar with the story, though, and it is quite an achievement. However, Burt's "1920s Indian" was by that time a pure handbuilt racing machine with practically nothing original left on it. It displaced 950cc, ran on alchohol, and was completely enclosed in a full length fairing with just the top of the rider's head sticking out. I am assuming that the 120 MPH NJ scooters are real scooters, not Bonneville Salt Flat machines. Scooter aerodynamics aren't very good; for one thing they are too short for smooth airflow. Even with the rider in a full crouch, 120 MPH would probably require at least 40, maybe 50 hp. I'm not saying it couldn't be done with an extremely modified GY6-based engine, but this would be a short-lived racing engine, not something you'd be cruising down the Garden State Parkway to Starbucks in Cape May.

ok so with the 1000 rpm clutch springs and 1000rpm torque spring at what speed did your variator shift?
