I have a SUNL 250 scooter. The battery seems weak after a ride (only 2~3 miles). I fully recharge the battery after every ride.
For whatever the reason is, I only have two chance to start the scooter (even a fully recharged battery). The third try always gives me a humming sound of the starter and then stops.
Did a experiment this morning. After I started the scooter, I disconnect the wire to the battery. The scooter stops.
What could go wrong?
Thanks

If the scooter dies when you disconnect the battery that means you have a DC CDI and that runs off the battery and not the stator. So if your battery is going dead which it appears to be it will leave stranded. Get a volt meter they are cheap under $10.00 and test your battery before starting it and leave it connected and see try starting your scooter. You will see that the voltage will drop like a rock. Thanks. I have done that. The reading is about 13.0 V before start. After that, it drops to 12.0~12.4 V at 1.5 K rpm. Even with 4k rpm, the voltage does not change.

Sounds like a bad R/R not charging the voltage should be going up as your rpms rise.
You can put your battery on TRICKLE charge and then test it again if it drops like that you have a bad battery. Lefty

The battery is fairly new (~ 8 months). If it is rectifier/regulator problem, why the scooter dies after I disconnect the battery? ?

Lefty I answered that question before. You have a DC CDI and the POWER is straight from the battery. So if your battery is bad or weak or you disconnect the battery your scooter will NOT START. Lefty

Thanks. So, your suggestion is to replace a new rectifier/regulator? Is that correct?
It took me a while to find out what DC CDI means. ^_^.
Could it be a stater problem? I hope it is R/R problem because it is cheaper.

you could try starting the scooter while the charger is still charging the battery (until you have a new battery).

Thanks the reply. I can recharge the battery. It is the drainage of the battery causing the problem. If I were on a trip without charging capability, I will be stuck on the road.

Check the voltage while it is hooked to a an auxiliary battery while running. Does it still drop like that... Basically use cables to hook to your car when its not running.
You could have a bad battery after only 8 months depends on what kind it is. Take it to your local auto parts store and ensure it is good before you order anything. It may still be under warranty. I have seen vehicles do this and replaced the alternator (stupidly) only to find the battery was toast all a long.
May you find the problem easily...
