i have a 2008 jm star 150 the bike was half way running when i got it from a friend he ran it hot and it shut off. well i got it back running and there was a chatter coming from the stator so i took it to the scooter shop and the guy said the rod is knocking so i had him out in a new rod and crank i got new top end with new head got the motor back together fire it off and the same chatter is coming from the stator aging like before. the valves are set right new carb and intake but i noticed when the stator chatters the bike skips and the lights flicker the lights are super dim at idle but they brighten up when i rev it if the stator is going will it make a chatter sound and cause the bike to act up like that im out of ideas any help would be awesome thanks

Are you sure it is not the STARTER CLUTCH that is making the racket.
The charging system is not the greatest on these scoots and IF the headlights are on at idle 99 percent of the will dim because the system does not put out enough voltage at low rpms. The lights will get brighter as your rpms rise.
But concerning the shatter or whatever Can you take a VIDEO of it Idleing?
The stator does not move it is bolted to the side case and the FLYWHEEL is the one that is locked onto the CRANKSHAFT that rotates AROUND the stator. The Flywheel has magnets around it and as it rotates around the POLES on the STATOR it produces electricty. Are you sure what is shattering is NOT the FAN COVER hitting the fan bolted onto the FLywheel.
Like I said a VIDEO with sound would help a lot. Lefty

I have the fan unbolted from he flywheel and when the motor chatters it tries to cut off could that be the starter clutch tryin to lock up maybe

Yes because the Starter Clutch should only lock in one way for starting and free wheeling the other way after you release the start button the starter stops and does not turn the starter clutch. It makes a metal to metal sound like a chain. Lefty

yea it does it for a second or two then stops and then does it agin its not always doin that sound so the whole time i thought the rod was bad it could have been the starter clutch well i have a brand new motor now lol now when i rode the bike the lights keep diming out while ride and flickering like there was a short some where now could the stator cause that problem.

Well now you can take the side cover off and replace the starter clutch.
Lights Flickering with the new motor, could be a bad ground, bad R/R, bad stator. take a volt meter and hook it up to your battery and see what the volts are at around 3-4k rpms. Lefty
