Hey guys! On my scoot (Tao VIP 150) there is a plastic box thing above the engine that has the air filter in it, and I find it to be quite ugly at times, and it blocks half my rim with new rim tape on it! I am just wondering if I could take the plastic box thing off and just mount the air filter to the tube that connects to the carb, I just don't know if the box plays a significant roll on the engine, or if it's just to block the air filter from getting dirty! I will post pics of my scoot and help would be awesome

im not sure of your exact scoot BUT NO DONT TAKE IT OFF your scoot is designed to get so much air from that ugly air box, if you take it off, not only can dirt get in ur carb but it will run like snit. heres a pic of mine, i painted it silver along with all kinds of other things, and i have a chrome CVT cover so i think it looks good i know i have a better pic but cant find it
i even painted the fan cover and heat painted the pipe

You can pull the box off, you will probably have a hose dangling that is a return hose from the valve cover. AND if you remove the box you will need some kind of after market air filter. When you change the air filter out you will need to tune the carb, it will most likely need a larger jet installed so you don't run lean and burn your valves.

The airbox protects against water and dirt from getting into the engine . Teh airbox does not choke the scooter like you would think by looking at it . Aftermarket airfilters like Uni or K&N style will require a few trial and error tests with largers jets to get it in tune . With a stock exhaust flow will bottle neck some as the free flow airfilters work best with unrestricted exhaust along with upjetting

yeah, the Uni filter and the K&N are out in the open. They are what most people will go to for an aftermarket filter. You will run the possibility of water getting on it in wet weather so they are betting for dry climates. I have seen a cover sold to help protect them from water, it may or may not fit for your scooter.

Damn, I was really hoping I could get rid if it :/ well now I'm wondering how hard it is to extend the engine by welding some supported bars that I can just bolt the engine to..

oh you can just you will have to add some kind of filter uni or k&l but then you will have to paly with the jets, tuning the carb etc
not hard just time consuming to find that perfect set up
go for it

There is a tube running from the box to cvt, just wondering if it would be a problem to remove that? Attachments:

This square thing had a lot of oil in it at one point.. I'm wondering if that is a bad thing? Attachments:

you had alot of oil in the box, because thats where the blow back is off the valve cover. if you look there should be a line running to your valve cover. if you get a uni filter, you will have to make the line coming off the valve cover to either a 'catch can' or just run it to the bottom of your engine , where the blow by just gets on the road.

You may want a PCV valve with a capped tube like my Echarm has . Most of the time I do not get anything it the tube unless I redline it for a bit then I get a squirt in it and top off the oil with a sip . My Echarm has the stock airbox and zooms . Changing the airfilter is a simple and fun mod but will need trail and error on rejetting it . With Uni or K&N you should not ride in the rain as if water gets into the engine while running you risk having it hydrolocking and destroying it
