I know I would have chosen a different scoot if I knew what I know now. Maybe some of have come to the same conclusions.
So, now after getting more knowledgable, who would you say are the top manufacturers?

If I had to choose again PUMA bar none. It is a Znen product but that's not the real reason. in a word, SERVICE I've never had people (not even a "brand name" dealer) go out of their way to help someone, not once but each and every time. (they are also Znen's direct representative in the U.S.)
P.S. They can also get parts for them when no one else can.

I have only had one, but my Xingyue (Vog 260, TBX 260) has never really let me down. They also made the beloved BMS Pathfinder 200 that had so many fans on this site, including our old friend Bluefront.

I Like my Jonway 150. 7500 miles, and going strong. I took it down to the bare frame last weekend because I am doing a stretch and lower.....found a few problems. mainly the rubber bushings on the engine mount are wallowed out. The fuel tank strap was corroded, and the tac-welded bracket for the petcock is about to fall off.....all miner issues. No rust on the frame!

I'm following in the footsteps (not to mention mechanical wizardry) of the late, great, but by no means forgotten Bluefront, in putting in a scrappy's oil catch tank system using his quick disconnect idea. (like I said the guy was a regular Merlin of mechanics.) |

Shanghai Scnecke is Jonway I love my Jonway Magnum and its fun to zoom by cars with it . With CFmoto having EFI , LC , disc brakes and a 2 year full warranty thats hard to beat . I had a seal go bad around the stator and got it replaced for free . Even the tires are warrantied for 6 months where even a light bulb is warrantied for 2 years with free labor and parts .

Why no love for Linhai main street 300's?. I have to say that mine is rock solid very, very fast, and the motor and drive train is very well built. The cosmetics (fit and finish) could be better but all in all there is no better Chinese bike out there. This thing is quick. It hugs the road like nobody's business. Pound for pound I would rate it right up there with the best of the chinese bikes. Bet they cant out run them.

Eton hands down. Companies like Vento and TNG aren't around anymore so I think Eton is the only Chinese company making a decent (2 stroke) scooter anymore.
Anything 4 stroke from China is garbage.
I heard CPI was coming back in which case I would have to say them.
I have worked on dozens of Chinese 4 stroke 50ccer's and honest to god they are all trash.
Everything with threads on it strips with like 2fpt, valve covers with paper thin metal or even holes in them sometimes. Petcocks that randomly decide to start/stop working as if they are intentionally trying to drive a diagnostic technician insane.
I don't even like taking them for free anymore. If someone wants to drop one off at my shop for free I will snatch up the forks and lights and such but 90% of the bike goes to the scrap yard.
I have had people ask me to sell them Chinese 4 stroke 50s instead of scrapping them and I just wont do it anymore. I feel like I am giving them a disease or something. I have had a couple buddies who I have sold Chinese 4 stroke 50s (for like $50 usually) to and almost all of them have ended up hating them and being turned off to scooters entirely.
The 2 stroke Chinese scooters are all pretty decent in my experience with the glaring exception being the Geely which is an even more gigantic piece of human excrement than the 4 stroke 50s.
I have to say though I have had a couple CFmotos with liquid cooled engines that were pretty decent. I still would take a Vento Triton or Eton Beamer over one any day but yeah, probably "the best of the worst" as it were.

My stepson has an xingyjue its should be dead as much as he wrecked it, but it still runs like a champ i wreck my tao it will be scrap metal im sure of it.

bar none I recently bought a Shenke 150. After some minor tweaking I find it dependable and tight. Only 800 miles so I may need more time on the road to really know. But for now I give it high marks. |

Well I have to say that the manufacturer in most cases has nothing to do with the final product. I have been in this business for quite a few years now, and we probably service about 3,000 Chinese scooters every year. So to say brand X is the best is, well, not reliable at best. The company has to take an interest in the final product and understand that bottom line has nothing to do with cost when you factor in after the sale warranty service. Companies like Flyscooters (when they first started), CF Moto, CPI and the like have it down right. They go to the factory, have their own assembly line, hire their own QC person and buy a more expensive build to prevent warranty claims. So in my experience, the companies that worry about warranty are the best to buy. I went to China in 2006, 07 and 08 when I was entertaining the idea of becoming a drop shipper, and the pricing was based on the quality of the end product. For example: Do you want chemi-gum (cardboard) rings or Japan standard? The options were limitless and only based on your budget. If you think a high quality scooter can't be produced in China, just ask a Vespa owner -- they'll disagree with you. My best recollection was at the Znen factory, who, after visiting all the other factories, was going to be my final choice. A good example was the 150 that Flyscooters called the Cadenza. In quantities of 44/container I believe, the price varied from a low of $445, to a high of $980 -- that's a BIG swing! They offered four levels of quality at the time, pre-built, and you could even customize the scooters with any parts you wanted. So if you wanted a Vespa or Honda quality scooter, all you had to do was specify the exact parts and pay the price! With that said, ALL of the factories only offered scooters by type or model number via email and phone dealings at one price, however, in person, at the factory, the options were endless. Chinese businessmen do business face-to-face differently than they do otherwise. So really, the bottom line IMO is whether or not the company selling the scooters does business in China, in person or not. And then, what quality do they want to offer? And finally, do they have their own representative on the assembly line overseeing the parts and assembly? Chinese are *known* to cheat if you don't have someone there! Even Flyscooters was cheated when their QC person was allegedly bribed by a Znen production manager! Let's look at Sanyang Motorcycle (SYM) as a good example. They have the MIO 50 in competition with the Honda Metro. The MIO is built by SYM China in the Xiamen Xiashing factory to exacting specifications of SYM Taiwan. You'll never hear a MIO owner on the board complaining about problems, why? Because they are virtually problem free. We service about 50 local customers who have MIOs and regular service is all they ever need, some as old as 2 years and others with 8 or 9K miles on them. Of course you're not going to get one for $499! The base price is $2268, and you can conceivably get one in my marketplace for around $2200 delivered. So after all these years, I personally have come to the conclusion that manufacturer and location matters not. The quality of the scooter is directly tied into the quality of the build and the dedication of the seller or importer. If you decide to buy from Roketa in Ontario, CA, expect to get the cheapest build available, however if you choose CF Moto, expect a much better experience with your scooter. Of course the CF Moto will cost you double the price of the Roketa! When it comes to Chinese scooters, price really does matter! And then, so does the importer! It's always a crap shoot though and you never can really tell by price! Remember Cheetah Motorsports? They sold a BUNCH of rebranded Roketa's at a MUCH higher price than the market was bearing at the time, but they *claimed* they were custom built and fully PDIed, so a lot of people were suckered into the 2-year bumper-to-bumper warranty for an MC-54-250 at $2795! Roketa was selling the same thing for $1800. What happened to Cheetah? Well they disappeared of course once the warranty claims started rolling in! So what's the real answer? Nobody knows!  -Rich |
