So I bought a used 07 Tank Sporty 150cc for the wife with 4300 miles on the ODO
The seller said it ran when parked but hadnt used it in a while. It was really dirty. The motor did spin over but you could tell the battery was low
So I brought it home, stripped all the plastics off and literally cleaned everything with degreaser and a toothbrush. The valve cover has a stripped bolt (imagine that) so it leak oil a bit. Im assuming I can heli-coil it or replace the head. They seem pretty cheap.
I drained the fuel and changed the oil. The filter screen looked good and clean. I pulled the plug and laid it on the engine and turned the motor over and verified I had a spark. After charging the battery I still had nothing. So i pulled the carb and there was varnish in the bowl. I pulled the jets, the fuel port, the vac cover and needed and the auto choke. I basically stripped the carb and let everything soak over night in Crown lacquer thinner (what I use in my parts washer). I reassembled everything and set the mixture screw at 2 turns out (I have tried 2.5-3)
When I pulled the auto choke, the needle was completely extended and did not retract on it own. So I bought a replacement ($8) and put it in.
After all of this I cannot get it to start on it own. I can spray ether in the inlet of the carb (breather side) and it will fire up and it will run. I can rev it up and down fine and it will idle on its own once warmed up. Once it is warm I can shut it down and restart it with no issue. But from a cold start, it wont start on its own I give it for starting fluid.
Also, the vac fuel valve is bypassed with the fuel tank directly to the carb (filter is in line).
So any ideas? I havent checked the valves primarily because Im scared to not be able to get it tighten back down.
