What is the proper way to filter past stopped cars at a stopped light? Let's say I'm in the left lane. Is it alright to move up to the front by passing them on the the left side?
Let's say I'm in the right lane. Is it alright to pass them on their right side?
Thanks

Either should work but I'd check with law specifically. I think you can't filter at more than 20mph. And of course you have to be careful of people changing lanes and opening doors. I do it here but you have to be careful.

The thing is....Some people aren't used to it because it's not legal in many neighboring states. We aren't watching for it because filtering would be insane in our state. I'm not saying it's wrong, just a little crazy in heavy traffic when people are switching lanes back and forth just get one car ahead. It's ridiculous to make a motorcycle wait behind stopped traffic but they need to make........ another lane for cycles, filtering is dangerous. And no I don't think you can filter off the right shoulder thats the bike lane.

It is legal in California. I guess what you're saying it's only proper to move up ahead of cars by going between them at the stop light. I'm just paranoid about getting hit from behind.

Don't do it myself (even if it is legal here) I'm usually toward the center part, just not on the "grease trail"

I'm not an expert (no lane-splitting here) but from what I've put together from reading various places, you can split when traffic is stopped or barely going. Then you can only go so much faster than the rest of the traffic. You want to check CA law for the exact speeds. And from the sound of it, you go between the lanes, not to one side or the other.

See the CHP Guide to Splitting LanesIMHO "Splitting" means splitting between two lanes. Legally you should use your turn signal for your lane changes as you wander between the two lanes. Do not split moving vehicles -- they can move sideways and squish you. At a traffic signal you split two lanes so you can switch to the other if one of the cars is quicker. Generally I don't bother, unless it is heavy traffic and a signal that will take several traffic changes to get through.
