Scooterdepot has a whole bunch of new 'scooters' and motorcycles; all based on a ~250cc chinese clone engine. I just don't get how a bobber (originally made as minimalistic as possible), could cost more than a regular motorcycle? Anyway, Do you think there exist smaller aftermarket sprockets, that will fit these manual geared bikes? Specifically looking into this one: www.scooterdepot.us/250cc-custom-bobber-motorcycles-street-legal-bikes-p-731.html

Reminds me of the Nike shoe story. They came out with a new sneaker design they could sell at low cost...and nobody wanted them. Then it was suggested they up the price, DRASTICALLY and lo and behold they couldn't keep them in stock.

Chinese bobbers cost $2,5k. But the Lifan Honda Rebel single cylinder clone, costs $2k. By this price range, the bobber should cost $1,5k, as it doesn't have all the shiny chrome, design plating, and nice leather seat, etc...
It may use the same engine, but the body of a Bobber is so much simpler!
I don't prefer a bobber... Too easy to sabotage.

When you have a company that offers this:
List price: $7,899.00 Our price: $2,799.00 Today's Special: $1,999.00 You Save: $5,900 (75%)
For most people it's a red flag.
For others they think they are getting the deal of their lifetime... only to find out that they got taken to the cleaners for falling for it.
Remember, "If it seems too good to be true the odds are it is."

Even in today's well educated society....the old PT Barnum saying still applies ..."There's a sucker born every minute"....It's a big reason they're able to stay in business.

I like the Cleveland designs. They are indeed an American company, but they use imported Lifan engines. I sat on a Misfit and though I am 6', it felt quite comfortable. My impression is that it would be as nimble as a mountain bike. Yet, custom bobbers based on Japanese bikes could be found for the same money. $3,000charlotte.craigslist.org/mcy/3549241874.html

I don't really care if they put MSRP of $3000, or $99.999. If the end price is $1999, I'm pretty happy with it!
I probably will have to give it a corrosion x or paint treatment, to treat the naked metal parts (like the sprockets), and maybe need to upgrade a few parts, but I don't think, for the price, to have a bad deal there.
They use the same engine as the 250cc scooters, except a manual transmission instead of a CVT; which is awesome for modding (just change one of the sprocket sizes, and your bike acts more the way you want it; no roller experiments, no belt braking, no variator losses)...
Despite these bobbers to be less aerodynamic, they pretty much have the same top end as the regular 250cc scooters; whatever wind losses kind of compensate for the gains in manual transmission.

And also, they go for this cheap, because it's a true hardtail, meaning zero suspension on the rear. It's very hard to ride, and definitely not recommendable on highways (where every pothole, or concrete roadblock bump feels like your back gets dislocated). Second hand you always can find good deals. Perhaps even these chinese bikes; on the second hand market they still can hold their value for like $1200.

My Dads got one of those SD 250 Bobbers. Hes had it about a year I guess. I'm the one that has the Kaw Ninja 250 trike on Ninjette.org . He wants to sell it (the bobber) because he can't ride a 2 wheeler anymore. We uped the gearing on it already for a more substancial top end. And I put big crome springs from costombikes or something like that to improve the ride. And it turned out to look and work quite well. When we got it the dumb asses at SD or in Asia "whereever" had it geared for pulling a plow. It would go like hell from 0 to 45 mph then it was about finished. We changed that.
