yesterday I aquired a non running 2001 Elite S. My task obviously is to get it running or atleast find out if it is worth an investment in time and parts to get running. The battery I was told was new. When I got the bike home I attempted the key and found there were no turn signals or horn so I tested the battery with a volt meter and it was dead. I put a charge on it for several hours and then I had signals and a strong horn but for the starter there was just a click. I then tested for voltage at the battery and then again at the relay and got over 12v at both locations. I then pulled the relay from the connection which was very hard to remove. I found some corrosion at the connection which I cleaned but still only clicking. Then I opened up the case for the variator. I should mention also that there was no kick start pedal with the bike and the kick start shaft splines were badly worn and damaged. Inside I found that the kick starter gear was missing. I also found that the face drive had been contacting parts of the cover and had worn the cover down at those points. I then attempted to engage the starter motor with the cover off. I know that with the cover off it is not going to work properly but the motor did engage pretty well, so then I looked at the cover and found that the bushing in the cover that the starter shaft sits in was worn and out of round. so what I am wondering is it OK to run this scooter with the kick gear removed as it is? Clearly the face drive is pushing out farther than it is intended to as it is contacting the case cover. I would really like to see if I can get the scooter started before ordering parts for the kick start. Attachments:

I have already cleaned the carburetor. It was incredibly crudded up on the outside and the pilot jet was clogged on the inside. So that is already sorted out and looks good now. Then I removed all of the old duct tape the previous owner had put on and used solvent to remove the adhesive. So things are looking better than these shots from yesterday. Attachments:

Here is the open case. You can see the odd contact grinding marks on the drive face. Attachments:

Here you can see the worn bushing for the electric start and the other points of contact wear on the case itself. Attachments:

I went ahead and ordered a new kick starter idle gear and asscociated mising parts to put the kick start part in order.

Are you finding a lot of parts for that model? Are they cheap?

Are you finding a lot of parts for that model? Are they cheap? The OEM parts are available but its not cheap like a Chinese scooter. There is a quality difference though. For example the plastic body panels. I have owned several Chinese scooters and the plastics are brittle and crack and break easily. The Honda plastics are higher quality and less prone to breaking. I removed all the duct tape on this scooter and it is clear this thing has been through hell and back. Lots and lots of deep scratches in the side panels. The right mirror was bent back and the left mirror had been replaced at some point. This thing has been dropped more than once. yet there is no breakage of the two big side panels and the lower skirt panels have only two of the little tabs broken. Thats it. The previous owner taped it up because they did not know what they were doing. I owned an Italian scooter before too and I can tell you those platics were also top quality.

I have a bushing in the cover that holds the shaft of the starter pinion. This bearing is out of round. I think it is causing my starter pinion to shift slightly and bind on the drive face gearing a bit. I ordered a new bushing and tried to remove the old one yesterday but cannot budge it. Its fused in there pretty good. Isa there an easy way to remove it without damaging the cover? Attachments:

As can be seen in the photo the bike had hit the ground more than once. The vinyl on the seat has road rash. The side plasitics all scratched up, yet the panels are not cracked or structurally damaged. The reason is high quality plastic that is not like peanut brittle. Attachments:

If I can get her running she is not going to look half bad. Attachments:

Acch! Now I got the battery charged up and the drive face sorted out so the starter motor engages correctly. I have the carb cleaned up well and put a new plug in. I have a good spark and gasoline in the bowl. I primed the cylinder with some starter fluid and crank it over and I get nothing. I tried this several times. With some starter fluid in the cylinder I should at least get a little pop. I am starting to wonder about proper compression but I should still get a little pop, even if it does not actually start right?

Guess my next step is a look at the reeds.

So I tested very low compression. I then opened up my top end to find a broken piston and some scratching in the cylinder. Damn! Attachments:

The good news here is that there are really good performance parts for the Elite-S. You're on your way to a great scoot.

Yes but I really do not want to put any money into this scooter. It was never my intention. I do not wish to go down that path. I simply wanted to de-restrict it. I wanted to simply open up the restrictions on the exhaust and airbox, remove the variator restriction and upjet.
I am wondering about whether the scratches in my cylinder are modest enough to hone it myself and put in a stock piston. All the scratches are very small but one I can catch my finger nail on a little bit.

So what about the fragments from the busted piston. I did find small bits sitting around the top parts of the case and removed them. What can I do to remove the rest? Is this a big concern?

Pretty sure you want to get ALL of it out of the case or it will end up back on the cylinder walls. Sorry don't have a suggestion for how. I don't know how much $$ you're into it so far, but I'd put a couple hundred in it and have a great ride.

See what I'm saying....I got my Aero for 300. I've put easy 600 in it. To make me happy. But that's still less than a grand for a Honda. And I am super happy with it.
