I just installed a new motor, but I hear something like a metal noise. I researched a bit and came up with two possibilities; the roller weights or the starter clutch. There seems to be nothing wrong with engine, I see no metal in the oil that's out of the ordinary for break in. Do you know of anything else I might have missed? I am going to check to see if its the roller weight first.

That depends on how the motor is wearing in, you not notice very fine metal pieces but they are there. Meanwhile as for the noise......Check to see if all your rollers are in correctly and that the belt isnt riding on something. At Idle does the wheel begin to turn? Are you getting good power? Is it more a rattle or something in tune with the motor's sound?

Ok, I started it without the variator and belt and its still there--so it not the rollers.
Scootercapecod: no the idle is low enough as to not engage the clutch.
It really sounds like its coming from the clutch even though it is not engaged.
I don't know how to describe it....a metallic whine...
I will have to take it apart some other time...I have a used clutch I can try.

Sounds can travel, eg : sounds can be in the metal at the front of the engine but sounds can be coming from the rear gear location. Just a thought

Did you forget to put gear lube in it or leave the packing oil in the engine?

Nah, its not a tap, tap. Its a consistent whine. Sort of like the sound of a chain saw chain turning.

It could be the difference in venting of the CVT case or the tooth configuration of the drive belt in the new engine.
The sprage clutch for the starter could possibly be stuck and keeping the starter engaged and spinning all the time. Is there that momentary lag when you press the start button typlical of when the sprage engages or is it more immediate like the sprage clutch was already engaged?
