a bad skirt would not lift the slide properly with the increased vacuum it gets when increasing the throttle causing you to run very very lean. wet and dark plug sounds more like a rich condition from either fuel/air mixture or a stuck enricher.

thank you for your reply. would hiccuping or chocking on acceleration be a symptom with a bad diaphragm/needle? it will idle and sometimes when I turn the handle it will choke and die. when I opened the top cover of the carb and lifted the diaphragm/needle assembly up and down, it did run. looking at this page of the parts of the carb for this scooter, can you tell me what part has the fuel/air mixture and which part is the enricher? www.oemmotorparts.com/oem5.asp?M=Sym&T=JOYRIDE%20-%20200%20cc&Y=2003&L=SY-JOY_3&O=CARBURETTOR&F=SY-JOY_3-AY&L2=SY-JOY_3-AYthank you so much for your insight. cheers. btw, I have another problem which is makes tapping almost diesel sound from what I belive is the head and was told my camshaft has scratches on it which is causing the noise but it may be the valve clearance which needs to calibrated.

I called up a place that sells used scooter parts they get after theyve been in accidents. they have a carb and I was wondering how hard is it to remove and replace a carb. is it a simple plug and play or is there something more to it with configuring it?
any help appreciated.
btw, a used carb will cost approximately 20% more than just replacing the part in the picture ( $130 vs 100) above and since I think there is something more than the part itself (wet plug with a lot of soot) thats causing me issues then I think its the smarter thing to do.

Look, it all tends towards a running RICH issue and not a diaphragm problem. Try adjusting the A/F screw (usually on the left hand side under the seat bucket. The carb is NOT hard to replace at all, Unplug the enricher cable, the fuel and vacuum lines, un screw the clamps on the airbox and intake manifold remove a throttle cable and simply wiggle the carb out of it's space

That diaphragm is junk, especially with all that crud on it, and enough crudwill impede the slide and capture the needle.
That will result in bogging and coughing on acceleration, as well as causing a rich condition by slowing the entry of air into the intake manifold.
I thoroughly recommend you replace that carb, because you are correct in the cost being more efficient by buying a complete unit.
Inspection the new carb diaphragm for tears or holes, but I doubt it will be as bad as what you have now.
SYM is an excellent scoot, and that it runs at all in this condition is indicative of that.
I had to replace a diaphragm on my Kymco Xciting 250 because it was bogging, and thediaphragm was like $60, but it cured the problem, and my carb was otherwise sound.
Just take your time disconnecting the old one, and replace it just like it came out, you'll see.

if this is your 1st time doing this. taking your carb off and on i would also recommend using alot of masking tape also............ ....... lol the mechs are all scratching their heads WHAT THE F?? if this is your 1st time when you unplug/remove something from something write a # on each one, tape on each piece so when u put it back together u dont forget
