OK y'all, haven't stopped here in donkey's years. Scooter has been sitting last few months, was running terrific when I parked it. (2003 reflex, brakes done before I parked it, new tires, belt, tuneup recently before parking it) -going to sell it to a friend (due to eyesight issues on my part) -jump started it, seems to still run fine. -When I accelerate, it is very rough and seems to lag, then accelerate suddenly, then lag again. -after messing with it, discovered if I hold the left brake in just a tiny fraction, it accelerates and runs fine at whatever speed. -so something needs adjusting, but I am not mechanically inclined and have NO idea what might cause this... -something to do with clutch?
I know one of you mechanical geniuses has an idea on this one...
Thanks!

Katie - It could just be the Ethanol in the gas acting up from lack of use and the extra drag of the brake puts enough extra load on it to smooth things out. Start with 2 ounces per gallon of Berryman's or Lucas fuel system cleaner in the gas, run it a few minutes untill it warms completely up and then shut it down and let is soak in over night. A short run the next day should get it cleared up unless it is terribly gunked up.
Beyond that it is hard to say. So take it one step at a time starting with treating the bike with the fuel system cleaner for old gasoline that has potentially gone bad and started plugging up passagways and orifices in the carbeurator.
It could still be that there is a clutch shoe sticking or that the slide in the variator is not moving freely or some gremlin in the wireing but hold off on chasing any of that and take care of the potential fuel issue first.

I agree its not likely any thing happened to anything but the fuel system. Weights or shoes could be sticking but just riding it might cure that

Thanks! I'll try that and let you know. gunk seems probable to me too.

When I changed out belts on my Honda BR, I had maybe 6-10 miles of rough riding, almost like a tuneing issue, but BRed told me sometimes new belts will need a few miles for the belt to seat to the variator angles properly. It was so boggy at a stop sign, and after the first 100-200 feet of so, then it would take off...kinda of. Once the belt seated, it was a dream ride again.

Hmm...I put some of the Lucas Fuel System Cleaner in it last night, warmed it up, let it sit overnight and rode it about an hour and a half through the neighborhood...issue continues. if I hold the brake just a tiny bit, usually I don't have any trouble. If I completely let off the brake, It hesitates, then guns, then hesitates. I also noticed that my battery didn't take a charge, and the tachometer is not showing a reading, staying at zero. Once in a while, it will show normal tach readings when stopped, but when I put the gas on, it drops to zero. Tach was working fine before I parked the bike. Speedometer, temp and gas gauge working normally. Holding left brake ever so slightly, I could get it up to 50 on frontage road with no difficulty. Let go and it sputters. I am confuzzled. Maybe there is gunk in the fuel filter? But why would holding the brake affect it?

Loose kill switch wire on brake handle? I have no idea, just trying to spark an idea.

Any thimg with todays gas you have to clean the carb after setting for such a long time. I have an 03 Reflex also and it set for a year and had to remove and clean the carb as it did very much the same as your. Also had to remove and replace the air filter as was blocked too much. As for the other problems, like the tach and all sounds like a little moisture check all connections and wires

At this point we could be looking at ground connections that corroded while the bike was sitting or even a bad battery. Start checking connections at the battery especially try to verify the ground wire between the battery, frame and engine. The ground connection beween the frame and the handle bars may need attention also.
Lack of use can cause all sorts of issues like this.
