This relates to a 50cc Peace Sports Chinese scooter.
I'm still trying to solve the problem of the mystery noise. It is a rattling noise. By removing the left crankcase cover and starting the engine, I determined that the noise is coming from the crankshaft. It might be the rollers in the drive pulley rattling, although they didn't previously rattle. It might be the crankshaft bearing. I removed the drive pulley but I can't start the engine with the drive pulley and sprocket removed, nothing for the starter to turn, so I can't determine if removing the drive pulley also removed the noise. There is a small amount of side play and a little more end play, in the crankshaft. I asked the man at the local motorcycle shop if that was normal and he said to drive a Chinese scooter until it quits and then buy a new one, so he wasn't any help. I don't want to take the engine apart to fix something that isn't broken. Does anybody have any advice about how to determine if that crankshaft bearing really needs to be replaced?
