I have a Baja SC150. It takes a very good battery and a lot of cranking to get it to run. I may be able to get it to fire once in a while but not run. If I once get it started it may run for a few seconds and quit. This will go on for quite a while. I can depend on it taking no less than 10 minutes to get it started and running. Often it will take 30 minutes or more.
Can someone tell me how the automatic choke is supposed to work as it would seem it is not working. I can give it full throttle when trying to start it and smell the gas. The next time I hit the starter it will try to fire (for a second). I have cleaned the carb twice but found nothing. Once running it will run ok. Has anyone else had this issue? How did you fix it?

Adjust your valves to. 004" on the intake, and. 005" on the exhaust. If that's not it, then clean your carb, sounds like a plugged idle jet.
Also, while trying to start, does gas leak out of the hose on top of the carb? If so you may have a stuck float.

Have you checked your diaphragm for tears?
Lastly check compression.

Mine did something simular when I was switching out carbs. It turned out to be the pilot (idle) jet.

No, there is no gas leaks and seems more like the choke is not working rather than being stuck open. How do these chokes work? Are they solenoid operated or are they a biometal strip that gets heated then opens once warm?

Have you checked your diaphragm for tears? Lastly check compression. No, there were no tears in the diaphram. Compression is ok. It seems to be only a warm weather bike as that is the only time I can get it to start. It will start but only for 1 to 3 seconds then die. Any attempt to feed it any gas until it gets warm will kill it but once warm it runs fine. Temps now are too low so I can not get it to run long enough to do anything. Mostly I run the battery down trying as the kick start is in such an awkward place as to be unusable for actually starting.

The ENRICHERs by DEFAULT when COLD are retracted and allow extra fuel to be sucked in as the motor is turned over. They are fed voltage by the stator after it starts up. As the scooter is running the ENRICHER is getting hot and the PLUNGER and NEEDLE start to EXPAND out about 1/4 of an inch from the retracted position to SHUT OFF THE EXTRA FUEL. This EXPANDING and shutting off the extra fuel usually happens within 3-4 minutes of the motor running. So take the ENRICHER off and look at it If the CYLINDER is about 1/4 of an inch AWAY #1 picture below it is EXTENDED and that is part of your problem. It should look like #2 below the CYLINDER should be even or a little into the hole of the HOLDER. While you have it out lay it on it side and Cover the hole with your THUMB and hold it there and try to start it, that acts as if the ENRICHER is RETRACTED and FEEDING EXTRA FUEL for cold starts. Lefty When you take it off COLD if it looks like this it is BAD: When you take it off COLD if it looks like this IT SHOULD BE FEEDING EXTRA FUEL. If it is not then one of the 3 feeds are clogged: If you suspect or care to, take the ENRICHER HOLDER off the carb and SPRAY CARB CLEANER IN EACH OF THE THREE FEED HOLES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLEAR. Then put it back on and give that a shot. If still a problem then we need to adjust the Carb a little. Let me know if any of the above fixed the cold starts. If not I will tell you what else to try.
