I decided to whip up a quick video to help anyone else who gets stuck in a similar situation. It's 10pm, you want to keep working on your cylinder head but alas... you can't get the keepers out of the valve spring retainers and no auto parts stores are open until tomorrow.
Here's a solution that worked for me.

I have done the same thing...remove them...using a socket to depress the spring....then use a telescoping magnet to pull them out. Getting them back in is difficult though!! But can be done without a valve spring compressor. I press down with a socket again....drop them in....then manipulate into place. But it takes some muscle and stamina. So at 5' 8" 143lbs...I gave in and bought a valve spring compressor.. ;D....I know sled...yer thinking 'man what a scrawny wuss'..

I thought I would do a quick follow-up video on how to put it back together without a specialty tool as well.
