Hi All! I'm Jeremy, from the far north suburbs of Chicago.
I'm picking up my 2004 Honda Silverwing tomorrow night. $3500. (new ones are about $9200)
I was a motorcyclist and scooterist in the past, having logged probably 50k miles on them.
Scooter-wise, I started with a Honda Metropolitan. Impressive quality, not so impressive power. I'd buy one again if I lived in a small town.
Next, it was a Genuine Buddy 125. Nice little scooter. But I found the front brake was too strong. The first panic stop I had (deer) I locked up the front at 50 mph, and it didn't play out so well for me. Just road rash, thanks to the full face helmet I was wearing.
After that, it was a Suzuki Burgman 400. Great scooter. I traded that in on my wife's car after I decided to get out of riding. (I had a motorcycle crash in Nov. 2009 and broke my leg in 3 places, but again, the full face helmet saved my life and jaw, and the rest of the gear even prevented any road rash.)
5 months ago, we had our first baby. So this is technically a TERRIBLE time to get back into riding and risk my life more than is needed. But I tell you what, I'm getting pretty depressed, sitting at home all the time, being a slave to that little girl. I need to get out and get force-fed some fresh air from time to time.
I liked the versatility of the Burgman before, but wanted something a little nimbler. I thought about a Honda PCX150, but they're not really available yet. Wanted the option to hit the highway if I need to, so the 125 wasn't an option.
I looked around locally, and found a Silverwing that seems to be in OK shape. About the same fuel economy as the Burgman, but faster. I think this should see me safely through the next few years. I hope I can get over 50 mpg most of the time on it. (The PCX is said to get 100+ mpg, which would have been nice!)
See you guys around, and if anyone is in the area and wants to hook up for some morning tea (or coffee) and a ride some weekend, let me know!
