I am wondering if there is any downside to having the valves a bit loose other then the clicking sound. At least they wouldn't tighten up and not seat completely possibly causing them to burn and cause other problems associated with tight valve clearances.

I would think it would effect performance, depending on how big of a gap your setting the valves, if you set the valves right each time, your goal is to have they completely seated, my last time I went to adjust my valves, they were seated, did have to adjust them.
Last February had my nut come loose on my valves (had very little power).

Running valves looser will make a bit of noise. It also acts like you changed the profile of your cam shaft to a small degree. The effects you will have are mainly reduced valve overlap which at high RPM can make the motor more efficient since there is less chance of unburned fuel making its way from the intake to the exhaust port, but also reduce maximum power a small amount if your cylinder isn't savaging all the exhaust out before the intake stroke begins.

Like they say a happy valve is a little loose valve, TICKY TICKY is good CHATTER CHATTER is to loose, No sound they may be to tight. I prefer Ticky Ticky.
If anyone knows hotrods its like having solid lifters. Sounds a diesel motor but not as loud. Wile

If the tappets whisper to you when you finish adjusting them that is good. If they are noticeable as you ride they are too loose. Sounding like a diesel motor will do nasty things to the cam, rockers, valve stem tips and if really bad the valve seat because the acceleration ramps of the cam profile are not being used.

The deceleration ramps ( back side) are the ones that will lessen the slam of the valves when they close. Just a small difference in terminology.
