I went out today to do some stuff on the scooter. Go here, go there, etc. Jonway YY250T / Viva MP250RO. On my way home, on the highway, going about 55 mph and ~5000 rpms, the scooter's engine started cutting out on me. Bogging down, changing the throttle position didn't help, it slowed the whole scooter down until the variator slowed enough to open the weights up and "disconnect" the belt. Then I coasted to a stop on the side of the highway. Once stopped, I tried restarting it. The starter wasn't turning the engine over. Not from a dead battery, but the engine seems to be locked up. I did get it to run for about 2-3 seconds, so it does have fuel and spark. Something else is wrong. So I stood there on the side of the road for 45 minutes like a jerkoff. Where's a cop when you want one? Finally some old guy stopped and gave me a ride home. I'll go back and look at the scooter later today with my car and some jumper cables. I'll give it time to completely cool down first. About the only things I can think of to tell at this point is that it was due for an oil change, it had 1300 miles on this change of engine oil, and the engine had been sounding a little more "rattly" the last couple days. So something is screwed up in there.

I went back to the scooter with my car and some jumper cables. I cranked the engine over, and the few times the starter actually turned it, the engine did start and run, but it was clear from the sound that something is clunking and grinding in there that shouldn't be. With an excessive amount of friction.
This is not good.

if you use regular motor oil then you shouldn't put more than 800 miles on an oil change.
no, it doesn't sound good. i hope the patient recovers.

Castrol GTX 10w-30 is what I've given it for 4118 miles. Every thousand miles or so. I checked the oil and it is full.
I was thinking that maybe the oil pump drive chain broke and that is the problem. If that's the case, then a new chain and pump gear, plus a cylinder kit, and it'll live again. Or maybe add in a new crank assembly and bearings for another $100.

I doubt you have a CF Moto 244cc engine. I'd be more inclined to say you have a clone of a CF Moto engine. Semantics to be sure: but a BIG difference.
In the same vein, not all 257cc engines are Linhai's. Most are Linhai clones.

I use 10W 30 synthetic blend oil. Change it every 800 miles. It has 5500 miles on it. Ya, that can't be to good, from what you discribe. Most switch to pure synthetic oil because they claim the engine runs cooler. But I am not sure the oil used had anything to do with your scooter breaking down. It could be another problem totally different from the oil you use. Example- gear oil might be low, CAUSING a strange sound and engine dieing. That is an example but you will have to go through everything to be sure.

I doubt you have a CF Moto 244cc engine. how would a person find out? the manufacturing plate says my scoot was made by hy-bird but parts on my engine has the CFmoto logo and CFmoto stamped on them.

howdy, did you check the water? IF you got anti freeze into the cylinder through leaking head gasket of something , the sugar in the anti freeze will totally seize up the piston. then when you get it to turn at all it will score the cylinder walls and destroy the compression. anyway- that could have been the source of the problem.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya

Well then, you do indeed have a CFMoto engine. We have had great success with CFMoto, but that's not to say they can't have their problems too. Unfortunately I'm the business partner, not the mechanical partner. I hope you are able to get help here on this board.

Check the antifreeze to see if oil and antifreeze are mixing. If clean, than you did not blow a head gasket.

After letting the oil drain for a week, I pulled the side cover off the engine today. The antifreeze and oil were not mixed.
I pulled the variator cover off and tried turning it by hand. That sh!t is locked solid!
On the right side of the engine, the oil pump chain was in one piece, albeit a bit loose, the camshaft chain appears to be ok also. I couldn't get a look at the center of the oil pump drive sprocket because some stupid little sheet metal cover is in the way. Got to pull the flywheel out.
Biggest surpise was a lot of metal shavings. The stator / flywheel magnet had a lot of metal shavings in it, and I took out the oil filter screen and it had a lot of metal shavings behind it also.
So something got fragged in there, I'm guessing bearings or piston pieces.
On the external oil line, the bolt that goes into the side cover had a piece of metal in it, which may have restricted but should not have eliminated oil flow. The spring loaded button in the end of the crankshaft had some good wear marks on it but there were way more metal shavings than it could have provided.
What is the thread size needed for a puller to pull the flywheel / magnet off the crankshaft? I know scrappydogscooters sells a puller but I'll be damned if I'm gonna blow $30 on a puller I will use ONE TIME! I'll spend $29.99 on making a puller, just on principle.

1. WAY too frickin' frackin' fruckin' expensive!!!!! I wouldn't pay HALF that price!!!!!
2. Wrong case length, my Jonway YY250T has 13 inch wheels and 918 belt length.
3. Wrong engine. Mine is the CFMoto 244 cc vertical cylinder.

Scooter got sold today for a few hundred bucks. Some kid came to look at it and I flat out told him how the motor was messed up, and he was all like "it's ok, I know about engines and my friend knows even more, we can fix it". Ok, slappy, have at it. The status of the scooter now is N.M.F.P. (Not My Fuggin' Problem)! I kind of miss riding it though, and saving gas money. I am without scooter........

;D ;D Well, look on the bright side, you can just watch CL and be ready to jump on the next great find. Lots of junk, but every once in a while some 90 year old widow is selling a garage queen uber model for $1500. Saw a nice low mile Aprilia Sport City for $1500 about a month ago.

(only it's a Znen 250) Could lighting strike twice?
